Love to bake, make pancakes, or top desserts with fresh whipped cream—but don’t have the money or counter space for a stand mixer? A highly capable hand mixer can do many of the same tasks for a fraction of the cost.

Hand mixers are best for light-duty jobs, but some models come with dough hooks to handle heavy-duty tasks, such as mixing bread dough.

“I own both a stand mixer and a hand mixer. I find that for everyday tasks like mixing a quick batch of cookies or a cake mix, a hand mixer is easy to grab, use in any bowl, and put away without giving up counter space,” says Elias Arias, the Consumer Reports engineer who leads our mixer testing.

In our performance tests, we time how fast a hand mixer can whip heavy cream to a light and fluffy texture. We also mix pancake batter to judge the ability to produce consistent and frothy results. And when we whip egg whites, we evaluate how quickly and to what extent they increase in volume. Each hand mixer is also scored for noise and convenience.

Not sure which you prefer—a hand or a stand mixer? For information on the features of both types of mixers, read our mixer buying guide. You can also find out which stand mixers excelled in our tests.

Below, listed in alphabetical order, are the top five hand mixers from our tests. Prices on some models have recently increased, possibly due to tariffs on imported parts, says Stacy Canova-Turner, CR’s market analyst for mixers. “Some American companies, like KitchenAid, assemble certain models in the U.S. but get their components from China or other sources overseas,” she says.

In our tests, the Braun HM5100 9 Speed hand mixer handles light tasks with ease, earning excellent scores for quickly creating light and fluffy egg whites and airy whipped cream. Its noise score is not half bad, either. This mixer comes with a dough hook for tougher tasks, a whisk, plus a three-year warranty.

The Cuisinart Power Advantage HM-6P1 earns excellent scores in our lab tests for beating egg whites and pancake batter. Plus, it was impressively quiet when we measured noise at its highest speed. Our testers also found this mixer very convenient to use, and it comes with cord storage, a whisk, and a three-year warranty.

The five-speed Ovente HM151 is the least expensive model on this list, and it performs admirably, producing fluffy egg whites and frothy pancake batter. It’s also very good at whipping cream. This model comes with a whisk and handy cord storage. But none of its parts are dishwasher-safe, and it comes with just a one-year warranty.

The Toastmaster TM-108HM excels in our tests at quickly whipping egg whites into light, fluffy, voluminous peaks. We also saw excellent volume and a smooth texture in our whipped cream tests. Pancake batter tests yielded an impressively smooth, frothy consistency, though this mixer isn’t as convenient to use as some of the other mixers we’ve tested. It comes with a whisk and only a one-year warranty.
