It’s easy to fall in love with a pro-style range. They look great, in an industrial sort of way. And they have a no-nonsense feel that can convince you that you’re ready to be a contestant on Top Chef.
Unfortunately, our testers report that they don’t work as great as they look. Our experts find that many of the models in our range ratings, some of which cost more than $5,000, simply don’t work as well as less-expensive standard models. Some models can’t bake evenly and others struggle to simmer water.

- How CR Tests Ranges
The market for pro-style ranges has been dominated for years by brands like KitchenAid, Thermador, Viking, and Wolf. But recently we’ve seen a new subclass emerge from brands such as ZLine. These models offer pro-style ranges to consumers at a more reasonable price, with 30-inch models often coming in under $3,000. In our tests, a ZLine range performed better than some of its more expensive counterparts: Even among pro-style models, price doesn’t necessarily correlate with performance.
“We see conventional ranges under $1,000 near the very top of our performance ratings,” says Kenneth Sutton, the CR engineer who leads testing of ranges, cooktops, and wall ovens. And many pro-style ranges at five times the cost just don’t cook all that well.
