Robot vacuums autonomously pick up debris of all sorts, including crumbs and pet hair, maneuvering through hard-to-reach places like under a sofa or a bed. But our tests show that how well they clean depends on the type of flooring they’re sent out to sweep.

In our robotic vacuum lab, we measure how well each model removes surface debris from bare floors (hardwood and laminate). We also gauge each one’s ability to navigate the nooks and crannies of a room, as well as how adequately it cleans the edges and corners. It’s worth noting that even those robotic vacuums earning high marks don’t quite stand up to the power of upright or canister vacuums. But they’re still a great option for pickups in between full vacuum sessions.

If you’re looking for a robot vacuum that can provide routine maintenance of your hardwood floors, check out the top-rated models below. CR’s top robot vacuums for hardwood flooring, listed below in alphabetical order, also happen to be some of the best robovacs in our ratings. Two of these models are also mops, but water can be damaging to hardwood floors, so save that function for areas of your home with vinyl or tile flooring. For complete test results and even more options, CR members can access our robotic vacuum and robot vacuum-mop combo ratings, and anyone can check out our vacuum cleaner buying guide to learn more about how robotic vacuums compare with other types of vacuum cleaners.

The Bissell FlexClean FurForce 4270L is a strong choice for hardwood floors. Its vacuuming performance is among the best of the models we’ve tested. It gets a stellar score on bare floors as well as edges and corners, and it does well at sucking up debris from carpets—an area where many robot vacuum and mop combos struggle. Although the charging base that it comes with automatically empties its dustbin, this model lacks some of the features found in the more expensive robot vacuum and mop combos we’ve tested. For example, you have to manually wash the model’s mopping pads and refill the robot with cleaning solution.

The Dyson 360 vis nav is noisy and on the heavy side, but it makes up for it with extremely strong suction that’s effective for cleaning hardwood floors. It is also excellent at picking up pet hair and embedded dirt from carpets. Instead of a conventional side brush, it uses an extending side duct to tackle edges and corners. It also has a large brush roll that spans the full size of the vacuum for effective cleaning, and though its dustbin is relatively small, it’s equipped with a convenient one-touch ejection system for easy emptying. But it is worth mentioning that while its brand reliability score is passable, it earns a poor rating for owner satisfaction.

The iRobot Roomba Max 705 is one of the highest-rated robot vacuums we’ve tested, earning excellent scores when it comes to cleaning hardwood floors. It is also stellar at eliminating pet hair from carpets, and its anti-tangle rubber brushes live up to their name. In our lab tests, this vacuum did a great job of preventing pet hair from getting caught in its brush roll. The vacuum has a self-emptying dock, allowing busy pet owners to be more hands-free during cleaning. Based on our member surveys, iRobot robotic vacs earned a decent rating in reliability and an unimpressive rating for owner satisfaction. Though the company filed for bankruptcy late last year, it says it doesn’t expect its apps, customer support, and other functions to be disrupted.

The Mova P10 Pro Ultra Gen2 excels at cleaning hardwood and other bare floors, such as tile and linoleum, leaving relatively little dirt or debris. We also found that it does a solid job at removing dirt on carpets. The model is above par at picking up pet hair, leaving little behind. In terms of navigation and mapping, it covers most of the space over multiple runs and sometimes gets trapped around furniture and obstacles. For mopping, it did an okay job removing some of the dried stains from the tiles we tested it on.

How CR Tests Robotic Vacuums
We test each vacuum’s ability to pick up dirt on carpet and bare floors. To test pickup on bare floors, our technicians spread 0.75 gram of sand over laminate flooring in a 4x5-foot framed test area and measure the amount the vacuum picks up in a 10-minute period.

We also use a two-part test to see how effective robot vacuums are at cleaning carpets. For surface cleaning, our technicians disperse 20 grams of cereal, 30 grams of rice, and 20 grams of yellow peas across a 4x5-foot framed test area of medium-pile carpet. Then they measure how much debris is captured over a 10-minute period.

For embedded dirt, technicians embed 75 grams of flour across a section of test carpet and let the vacuum run in the area for 3 minutes, then weigh the amount of flour it picked up. Human hair is embedded in the same section of the test carpet. Technicians time how long it takes for the vacuum to pick up the hair, then weigh the amount that’s in the dustbin and the brush roll.

Our testers also rate robovacs on ease of use, which includes factors such as the size of the dustbin, whether the vacuum has a handle for carrying, how easy it is to clean the brush roll, whether the vacuum scatters debris, and whether you can schedule it for routine cleaning. We also assess robovacs on data privacy and security, scoring them on more than 70 indicators using The Digital Standard. And, as with our ratings for other household appliances, Consumer Reports assesses each vacuum brand’s owner satisfaction and predicted reliability based on our member surveys.
