As summer kicks into gear and your little humans head out to the pool or the beach, swim diapers become a lot more important. If your child isn’t toilet trained, a swim diaper is necessary for containing untimely poops and keeping your community safe; exposure to fecal matter in water can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, respiratory symptoms, and beyond. As one swim teacher told me, “God forbid your kid trusts a fart. We require swim diapers in our pools!”

Many pools and swim schools require that caregivers double up their child’s swim diaper to prevent leakage. So for this guide, we evaluated six popular disposable and reusable swim diapers, testing them alone and in double layers with Lily, a very squirmy, almost-2-year-old water lover.

We took her to the pool and put her in the water for 5 minutes with each diaper combination, then timed the removal process (because every parent knows that ease of removal is key for a good swim diaper experience).

We took notes about whether or not the inner diaper was wet after 5 minutes and also measured diaper dry times. Plus, we considered how well the diaper fit and whether you’d need to size up if you were required to put two diapers on your child at your swim location of choice.
