If you have a little one at home, babyproofing your kitchen is a smart way to prevent accidents like burns, scrapes, or cuts, and the stove is a good place to start. Those shiny knobs on your oven’s front panel can be all too tempting for small hands to spin. An accidental turn or inadvertent bump could result in leaking gas, a hot burner, or a flame—all of which is what stove knob safety covers and locks aim to prevent.
But how well do they really work? Turns out, stove knob covers can be a deterrent, but they’re not a failsafe. They might prevent someone from bumping the knobs inadvertently, but “most of these products may not be effective in stopping a curious child from accessing the knob and turning them on,” says José Amézquita, who led CR’s testing on babyproofing products. Just two of the products we tested may actually prevent a child from using a stove knob, Amézquita found.
Amézquita spent one week in our lab testing seven different babyproofing stove knob covers and stove knob locks. He put each cover or lock through rigorous testing to see if it could hold up to a determined toddler (they can be surprisingly strong!), and also checked how easy (or complicated) they were to install, use, and remove. See our top choices below, plus expert tips for making your kitchen a safer place for babies and young children.
How We Tested Stove Knob Covers
We evaluated each stove knob cover on five different gas or electric ranges in our test lab, each with different-sized knobs. Here’s what we looked for:
Ease of installation: We also counted the number of steps involved in installing the product and the number of tools required.
