Overall, the A4 is a capable, well-finished car that's pleasant to drive. Its interior exhibits impressive attention to detail and excellent fit and finish, but the rear seat is cramped. Handling is fairly nimble, but the ride is stiff at low speeds. The front-wheel drive version we tested was equipped with an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is smooth and responsive, while optimizing acceleration and fuel economy. The CVT isn't available on all-wheel-drive Quattro models. Front-wheel-drive models get better gas mileage, but AWD versions provide better snow traction.
