    Audi A6 Road Test
    Introduction

The redesigned Audi A6 is among the best midsized luxury sedans we've tested. It has class-leading fuel economy, lively and sporty handling, an easy-to-use infotainment system, and an elegant, if understated, interior. However, the Audi's low-speed manners and its ride, which is on the firm side, prevent it from taking top honors in the class.

The A6 we tested came with a four-cylinder engine and dual-clutch automatic transmission, which shine during hurried, spirited driving. The engine and transmission are alert, the sharp steering brings the driver into the action, and the superb braking performance adds a measure of control and confidence.

The powertrain is also frugal, returning 26 mpg overall in our tests. This is a commendable figure for such a substantial all-wheel-drive car.

However, even with all of these merits, a few traits might give potential buyers a pause. For instance, the A6 has a frustrating tendency to hesitate when pulling away from a rolling stop like when the driver is trying to pull out into traffic at urban speeds. The car feels flat footed and in limbo until the expected acceleration finally comes on. In addition, the transmission doesn't always execute shifts with the smoothness expected of a $60,000 sedan.

Overall, the ride is taut and steady, and the suspension does a good job of absorbing and filtering out the harsh impacts from potholes and ruts. However, drivers and passengers will notice that at times the firm suspension can transmit the texture of the road surface into the cabin.

Being inside the A6's cabin is a real treat. There's a pleasing mix of high-quality materials, including wood, leather, and aluminum trim. Both the front and rear seats are comfortable and supportive, even for long trips. The well-finished trunk is huge.

While most wind and road noise are kept out of the cabin, the sound from the four-cylinder engine is noticeable, and less polished at the sound from the V6-powered A6.

The two touch screens that control the audio, phone, and navigation functions might intimidate drivers at first, but we found them quite logical to use. They respond quickly to inputs, and the icons and buttons are well organized. While the top screen handles audio and navigation functionality, the lower screen mostly serves the climate control. Advanced interior technology includes wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless charging.

Both forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection are standard. Blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning are optional.

    Summary

    Best Version to Get

No matter the engine choice, we would go with a Premium Plus version for the blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel, and B&O audio system.
