Many BMW purists are lamenting the, well, softening of the automaker's "Ultimate Driving Machine" edict in favor of more comfort, luxury, and technology in recent models. In most cases, we feel the automaker has achieved a good balance between performance and livability, but, yes, certain models are missing that razor-sharp handling edge we'd grown to expect.

Read more about extended warrantiesThe redesigned 2022 BMW 2 Series is bigger, more powerful, and a little bit heavier, and incorporates the latest performance, safety, and infotainment technology. Not to be confused with the 2 Series Gran Coupe, the new 2 is available either as the rear-wheel-drive 230i coupe powered by a 255-hp turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or the all-wheel-drive M240i XDrive powered by a 382-hp turbo inline-six. The latter, according to BMW, can go from zero to 60 mph in as little as 4.1 seconds. Active safety and driver assistance features such as FCW, AEB, BSW, and RCTW are standard on both versions of the car, and upgrades such as ACC, a head-up display, digital instruments, and adaptive suspension are available. 2025 brought BMW's latest iDrive 8.5 infotainment system.
The small 2 Series coupe and convertible has razor-sharp handling and a sense of immediacy that is unlike other recent BMWs, which seem to focus more on luxury and comfort. The 228i comes with a 240-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder while the up-level M235i we tested has a terrific 320-hp, 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder. Transmission choices are a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The excellent front seats are surrounded with ample space, but the rear seats remain very cramped. Interior appointments are first rate but the iDrive unified control system remains a bit of a pain to learn and use. . A sportier, more-powerful M2 version arrived in 2016. Updates for 2017 brought a change in nomenclature, with the base 228i becoming the 230i and powered by a 248-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The 2020 introduced Gran Coupe 4-door versions, 228i xDrive and M235i xDrive, were based on a different, less performance-oriented platform.
