    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"Check Engine Light kept coming on. May have been due to an aftermarket charger"

    Anonymous, CA (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The leveling will not hold until the vehicle is started after setting the leveling."

    Anonymous, VA (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid xDrive50e 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    "signal lights quit working"

    Anonymous, TX (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid xDrive50e 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

""When I had the vehicle for approximately 1 month, the engine light came on. Took it to the dealer and had it checked out. It gave an error code that something was wrong with the plug in charging system. The technician checked it out and found nothing wrong. He cleared the codes and gave the vehicle back to me and said he couldnt find anything wrong. I never had any problems after that. Also didnt really have any issues before.""

    Anonymous, NJ (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

    What Owners Say

    Charges too slowly

"With using a regular garage electrical outlet, it would take sometimes 40 plus hours to charge to 80%. BMW service had it and reprogrammed it and I then installed a level 2 charger in my garage and now it charges in less than 3 hours."

    Anonymous, FL (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid xDrive50e 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Charging app problem

"App displays incorrect charge as if it is calculating it w/o occasionally connecting with car to confirm"

    Anonymous, SC (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid xDrive50e 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Other electric/hybrid charging problem

"When charge is fully gone and car has been driven in hybrid mode for 15 min or more, it can take as long as 12 hours for car to cool-off enough to start electric charging. The app says the car is charging but it doesnt."

    Anonymous, CO (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid xDrive50e 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"At first, we could use included cable to charge up to 10A, but recently we can only charge at 6A or 7A, and frequently unable to charge at all. It is not clear to what extent hot weather, possible hidden damage to outlets or a finicky car computer that makes it difficult to charge. We will probably have to install a 240V charging receptacle which we wanted to do eventually, but now will have to do for effective charging."

    Anonymous, SC (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid xDrive50e 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

    What Owners Say

    Electric/hybrid battery pack cooling problem

"Software glitch in the electric battery cooling system continued a Check Engine Light display."

    Anonymous, TX (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Electric/hybrid battery pack malfunction (didn't need replacement)

"Vehicle would not start or charge. Error message mentioned Drivetrain. Problem with battery sensor. Nearly $4K in labor! Covered by warranty."

    Anonymous, CA (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Other emissions/fuel system problem

"Apparently there was a software glitch in the 2025 X5 cars in which the "check engine" light kept coming on. The car ran well and there did not seem to be a real problem. But the light would come on, stay on for 4-8 days, then go off. This started the very day I drove the car home. After calls and trips to the dealer, finally in April or May, the dealer installed a software update that is supposed to correct this. It's been about 4 months and the light has not come back on, so it appears to be fixed. If you research this online, you'll find this was a problem that is well documented on "bimmer" chat rooms."

    Anonymous, GA (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid xDrive50e 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    Other electrical system problem

""Check Engine Light continously on after every second or third drive from date of purchase. BMW knew of the problem in the X5 plug-in and should have stopped sale on car. Multiple trips to the dealer, loaners and a threatened lawsuit for selling a lemon, a software upgrade supposedly fixed the problem. No issues so far.""

    Anonymous, TX (2025 BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.
