First Take
The X6 is a coupe-like sporty SUV based on the X5. Most versions are powered by a 3.0-liter, turbocharged six-cylinder; a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 is also offered. The standard AWD system can vary the torque from side to side to minimize understeer. It has many attributes that are similar to the X5, but the styling severely hurts rear visibility, cabin access, and cargo storage. The standard seating is four occupants; a five-passenger version is optional. A high-performance M model is also available.

Model History
2020-
Current Generation

The 2020 X6 is a coupelike, sporty SUV that's based on the redesigned X5. The smooth 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic make it quick, and our tested X5 got a good 23 mpg overall. The luxurious cabin is whisper-quiet, and the seats are all-day comfortable. Handling is very competent, but the X6's ride is stiffer than the X5's. The controls take time to learn but prove to be logical, and the infotainment system works seamlessly. Unlike its sibling, the X6's styling severely hampers rear visibility, rear-seat access, and cargo room. A rear-wheel-drive version is also available, as is a V8-powered M50i. A 2024 refresh brought updated styling, more power, and the latest iDrive infotainment system.

2015-2019
2015 Redesign Year
Styling was refreshed for 2015 and the V8 engine got more power. While the X5 traded some of its sporty feel for a cushier ride, the X6 continues to lean more toward handling than ride comfort. Inside, you'll find a plush and well-constructed interior, with padded surfaces and handsome wood and brushed-chrome trim. We would choose the standard six-cylinder engine to get the best blend of performance and fuel economy. The backup camera is the only option we consider a must-have.
2008-2014
2008 Redesign Year
Based on the X5 SUV, the X6 is a tall coupe with four seats and standard all-wheel drive. A turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine powers most versions and a 4.4-liter V8 is the up-level choice. The all-wheel-drive system can vary the torque from side to side to minimize understeer. In addition to being highly polarizing, the styling severely hurts rear visibility, cabin access, and cargo storage. Hybrid and high-performance M versions were added in 2010.
