Road Test

Buick's Enclave is a large, car-based SUV with a spacious third-row seat, sound ride quality and decent handling. However, poor outward visibility to the rear, awkward placement of some controls, and unimpressive fuel economy are its weaknesses. A backup camera integrated into the rearview mirror was made optional for 2009, and is a useful addition.

Model History
2025-
Current Generation

Redesigned for 2025, the Buick Enclave three-row SUV makes notable technological advances, with a large screen that contains the instrument panel and an infotainment touch- screen that's relatively easy to use. The Enclave ditches the refined 3.6-liter V6 for a noisy 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both front- and all-wheel drive are offered. Power is adequate, but the rough-sounding engine takes away from the experience. Otherwise, the Enclave is quiet and the ride is comfortable. Handling is sound but not exceptional. The interior is roomy, and most versions have second-row captain's chairs, which can fold with the press of a button on the ST and Avenir trims. The top Avenir trim comes with an adaptive suspension.

2018-2024
2018 Redesign Year

Redesigned for 2018, the Enclave provided improved fuel economy, more space, and a variety of safety and connectivity features. Power comes from a lively 3.6-liter V6 teamed with a smooth, responsive nine-speed automatic. We got 18 mpg overall in our tests. Towing capacity is 5,000 pounds. The roomy cabin is very quiet and the ride is comfortable, befitting a Buick flagship. The third-row seat is relatively roomy for the class. The infotainment system is easy to use, but the unintuitive gear selector is a nuisance in parking maneuvers. A manual sunshade for the sunroof and only a two-way lumbar adjustment for the seat are odd, given the price. The Enclave is freshened for 2022 with a number of exterior styling updates. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning become standard. Highway-speed automatic emergency braking is available. Other changes include a new rear power sunshade for the available power moonroof, revised seat trim and seat foam, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

2008-2017
2008 Redesign Year
The Buick Enclave is a large, car-based SUV with three rows of seats. It shares a platform with the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook. All use GM's contemporary 3.6-liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that is a bit hesitant to downshift. We found the ride comfortable and quiet, and the powertrain smooth. Handling is secure and pretty agile for such a big vehicle. The third-row seat is roomy enough for adults. Fit and finish are excellent. Fuel economy was slightly worse in the heavier Enclave than in our tested Traverse. A revised version with an improved infotainment system and the industry's first center airbag between the front seats debuted for 2013.
