Many shoppers are making fuel economy a top priority when selecting their next new car. But it’s important to keep performance, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety in mind, too. These are all part of the Overall Score that Consumer Reports gives to new cars it tests, and those virtues are factored into a model’s eligibility for recommendation.

To help CR members, we reviewed the latest transaction data reflecting what people actually paid for 2024 model-year cars in the past month. Then we filtered the list to include only CR Recommended models that are among those with the best fuel economy for their class. In short, these are good models with good fuel economy. This list highlights models from Acura, Honda, Lexus, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota. There is a variety of cars and SUVs, each representing an efficient choice in their category.

We ranked the vehicles by how good a deal they are, relative to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, by using the percentage of savings from the sticker price. The top model represents the best deal. Each model is selling for less than MSRP, even if just barely.

It’s worth checking for incentives because there are some models here that can be had for even less with current automaker offerings. Detailed pricing information and complete ratings are available for all current vehicles on their respective model pages, linked below. Local supply and demand will influence how much a dealer is willing to bend on price.
