Road Test

The Cruze is a solid and substantial-feeling compact car. Its taut, steady and controlled ride makes it one of the smoothest of the small sedans. Inside, it's also one of the quietest small sedans we'd tested. While gasoline-powered models have lackluster fuel economy, an efficient turbodiesel engine is also available.

Model History
2016-
Current Generation

A redesigned Cruze was introduced for 2016. The car was roomier, especially in the rear seat and offered a more luxurious interior. The 2016 car's standard engine is an updated 1.4-liter, four-cylinder turbo mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. A start-stop feature reduces fuel use during idling. Infotainment features included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which mirror your cell-phone screen on the dashboard. It put Apple or Google maps at your fingertips while driving and made it easy to use natural voice commands via Siri or Google Now from your phone.  A 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine and hatchback version were new for 2017. 2019 was the last year for the Cruze.

2011-2015
2011 Redesign Year
In 2011, the Cruze replaced, and greatly improved upon, the unimpressive Cobalt as Chevrolet's mainstream small car. In addition to offering handsome styling, it feels solid and substantial, handles nicely, and has a firm but steady and controlled ride. Two four-cylinder engines are offered: a base 1.8-liter and an up-level turbocharged 1.4-liter. The latter has the edge in power delivery and quietness. Both, however, delivered a rather unimpressive 26 mpg. Noise levels are moderate, which is fairly good for this class. The well-finished cabin feels spacious up front, even for tall drivers, but it's cramped in the rear.
