Road Test

At this point, we'd determined the unimpressive Chevrolet Impala was overdue for a redesign. Its short list of good points included simple radio controls and a large trunk. Although a large sedan, the cabin is less roomy and comfortable than many smaller offerings. Handling is clumsy and powertrain refinement falls short. The rear seat is skimpy for a car this size and the car's fit and finish are second-rate.

Model History
2014-
Current Generation

For 2014, the Impala was completely redesigned. With a contemporary interior and powertrain, as well as impressive ride and handling, it became one of our top-rated sedans. The spacious and quiet cabin features generally high-quality materials and trim. Get the 2LT to garner Impala's advanced safety systems. The Convenience package includes the rear-view camera, which is essential, given the Impala's poor rear visibility. The Driver Confidence package adds forward-collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot detection and lane departure warning. Changes for 2015 included standard WiFi hotspot capability and the addition of a new start/stop system for the four-cylinder. A compressed natural gas (CNG) version was also offered. Updates for 2016 included Apple CarPlay capability and wireless cell phone charging. 2020 was the last year for the Impala.

2006-2013
2006 Redesign Year
The 2006 freshening brought updated engines. Performance got better while fuel economy stayed at an acceptable 20 mpg. Though ride and handling are sound, they lag behind those of many competitors. On the other hand, the revised interior is comfortable and has logical controls. Still, wind noise is notable and the engine isn't particularly refined. A powerful V8 was optional for a few years. A more potent V6 engine and a new six-speed automatic transmission debuted for 2012.
2000-2005
2000 Redesign Year
While this version of the Impala doesn't stand out against its contemporaries, it seats six with a front bench seat. Its various V6 engines got the job done, but weren't very smooth or refined. Ride and handling are mediocre by modern standards. Front head- and legroom are generous and the front seats are reasonably comfortable. However, the rear bench is uncomfortable and too low.
