The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

""Engine seized at 48,000 miles because of a defect in the crank bearing tolerances that is now part of a recall. The engine was replaced under warranty along with oil coolant line.""

    Anonymous A., PA (2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST 6.2-L V8)

"Engine gave out immediately in late May 2025. Engine is being replaced. Hope to receive the truck back in September 2025"

    Anonymous, TN (2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Unsure 6.2-L V8)

"2 push rods broke lost number 3 cylinder. Was on vacation. Had to get it rebuilt"

Anonymous, MI (2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)
    Other major engine problem

"One time problem before taking to dealer for fix. Apparently, one of the pistons stopped working making the truck operable, but at risk for further damage."

Anonymous, NE (2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Unsure)

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Rough shifting

""After purchasing this truck new, at about 4000 miles the transmission started to shift hard from 1st to 2nd and started to shutter under light load. At 4178 miles the torque converter was replaced. The shutter came back after only 2weeks of driving. Then at 7603 miles the truck went back to the dealer because of hard shifting, shuttering, and erratic shifting at times. Was told by the dealer now, this is normal. At 35721 miles the transmission lost all forward and reverse gears. The valve body was replaced again. The transmission shifts were the best they had ever been, but the shutter was still there and slightly more. Now at around 42500 miles the shutter is happening more often and the shifting is intermittently harder. Also at times the transmission feels like an additional clutch is applied for part of a second causing a bind that you feel as a very fast jerk. I never want another gm product for the way gms customer service treated me and because they wont stand behind the product that has problems!""

Anonymous, MI (2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 2.7-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""At about 50k miles the transmission started behaving poorly. Hard shifts, vibration, hesitation. Occasional but regular very hard shifts when engine start/stop engages""

    Anonymous, NC (2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
    Slipping transmission

""Sometimes studders, dealer cant find anything wrong with it.""

    Display screen freezes up

"The infotainment unit is often laggy while using Android Auto. Occasionally crashes"

    Anonymous, CA (2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
    Refrigerant leaks

"Dealership says theres a leak but cant find it! They put dye in but STILL cant find leak even though they say theres is one."

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

I keep getting a MIL message (check engine light) U092F that only occurs when I drive in rainy conditions, particularly when driving through puddles. Driving through my local car wash with underbody spray does not trigger the code. When the check engine light comes on, it only lasts for three or four days depending on the weather.
