    First Take
Chrysler's first SUV is a twin of the Dodge Durango and has similar performance data. It seats eight and has electronic stability control with roll mitigation, and three-row curtain air bags. The base engine is an updated 4.7-liter V8. A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is optional and has a system that shuts off four cylinders when cruising, but in our testing the Durango with that engine returned just 13 mpg overall. It was quiet but thirsty. Handling is clumsy and the ride is unsettled. Wood trim and an analog clock set the interior apart from the Dodge. A hybrid version debuted for the 2009 model year, but was quickly discontinued. Production of both Aspen and Durango has been suspended.
