"Battery quit working needed to towed to shop covered under warranty but disconcerting"

Anonymous, NM (2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Hybrid Titanium 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Last month I was sitting at a red light in the left turn lane with intentions that when the light turned green I would make a left onto the main road. I bought my car used in March of 2023 and put roughly 10k miles on it in the first 6 months of owning it before a recall for the hybrid battery was posted. Last years summer here in Arizona seemed to run a daily average of 123-128 degrees for at least 2 of the 4 months. I never had a problem with the old hybrid battery even when driving to California from Arizona and sometimes back again on the same day in that 128 degree heat. Only due to the recall did I have the cars hybrid battery replaced in October of 2023. Since October, I have only put approx 5k miles on the car with the new battery and this summer is much cooler than last years. So, when the light turned green and I pressed on the accelerator the car acted as if it had run out of gas. It jerked forward a few inches then abruptly stopped, jerked forward again and then stopped again. It did this 4-5 times then quit doing anything. I could not get it out of gear nor could I turn the car off. The lights, the dash and navigation system were still on but the car wouldnt move forward, switch into neutral nor turn off. At this point I am sitting almost in the center of the intersection of State Highway 95 which is the main road through Western Arizona that can take you to many favorite and well known tourist spots in Arizona, Nevada California and in other states such as to Laughlin, Las Vegas, Davis Dam, Lake Havasu, Parker, and to many forests, Indian Reservations and more. It is not a road you want to be blocking. Afraid to take my foot off the brake for fear that the car would regain consciousness and start moving on its own I was stuck in the intersection baking in the 112+ degree heat, facing the sun, in the intersection on State Highway 95 and sitting perpendicular to oncoming traffic averaging speeds of 55 mph at approx 5:15pm. People offered to help push me out of the intersection but I could not get the car out of gear to put into Neutral. All I could do was sit with my iPhone, on hold with Ford, and hope that everybody driving towards my drivers door was paying attention and wouldnt t-bone me."

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"I was driving when the car quit, I pulled over, waited awhile the car started, I called my Ford Dealer, asking to bring it in while the car was running, (it quit twice) they said no, bring it tomorrow. In the morning the car was dead in my garage, I had to call a towing company, who had a hard time getting it out of the garage & up onto their truck. Days later the Dealer called, saying they had to replace the 12V battery, under warranty. The car has been in under recall, twice & I waiting on another recall, which they claim could cause the engine to go on fire, it is long past their estimate, on the recall. The car in the mean time has many small things go wrong, I have a list to present to the dealer. I would get rid of it, except I pull it behind my RV."

Anonymous, VA (2021 Ford Escape Hybrid Hybrid Titanium 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
