This version of the Explorer switched to a car-based platform. It has a roomy and practical interior, a usable third-row seat and generous cargo capacity. It also has a steady and compliant ride, along with respectable fuel economy.
Ultimately though, the Explorer still falls a bit short of the best in this competitive class. The engine is somewhat noisy, handling is secure but lacks agility and the driving position is flawed. Further, the optional MyFordTouch control interface is overly complicated and distracting.
