The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Ford Explorer owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"Currently experiencing a couple of sensor issues as the systems affected are fine. Traction control, power steering assist, O2 sensor faults, but no issue with driving. Suspect it may be from lack of use, but that shouldn't cause failures."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

"Heat stopped working due to problem with water pump. As this year/model houses water pump inside transmission, it all had to be removed in order to fix the leak. The warranty covered this. I was also told this was not uncommon problem. I believe more recent models do not have water pump inside transmission for obvious reasons."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Ford Explorer Limited 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    "Water pump went out"

    Anonymous A., (2018 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

"Recalls per manufacturer. Waiting for response to new callback about front window frames tobe replaced"

"Recall early after purchase. Not able to provide this info as I am not home. Still waiting for front windows to have black sides that hold window"

Anonymous, VA (2018 Ford Explorer Base 3.5-L V6)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

    What Owners Say

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Other emissions/fuel system problem

"So basically about 6 months after we purchased it we started having problems of "running out of gas" (in the middle of nowhere: we're in a VERY rural area) anytime the fuel gauge was at or under 1/4. We started carrying a spare fuel tank at all times to be safe, but that's only 5 gallons, so there were times we'd use it then the car would end up stopped again a few miles later. We couldn't find any leaks, the dealer we purchased from couldn't seem to replicate it (THREE times we brought it in!). Ford had us go to a different dealer location and they found *several* issues with the tank and system. I don't recall exactly what (it's not my vehicle), but I remember the sensor gauge in the tank was *damaged*, there was like 3 lbs of sand in the tank (wtf right?), the tank was loose so everything was sloshing around, the fuel gauge in the dash wasn't calibrated correctly, and I believe there was something wrong with the fuel injector system too. Ford covered something like 2/3 the costs of the repairs (extended warranty) but it was still a fairly expensive set of issues. And we couldn't use the vehicle at all several times before it was finally repaired, as well as about a week each with the original dealership and close to two weeks at the one that actually repaired it. :("

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"The A/C compressor suddenly seized up during a vacation in weather warmer than usual. The dealer had to replace it twice before it worked. Spent a week of vacation on that."

Anonymous, QC (2018 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)
    Heater system

"The right center vent would only blow cold air"

    What Owners Say

    Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Right rear tail light went out. There is no bulb to replace you have to buy the whole module which cost about $700"

Anonymous, NY (2018 Ford Explorer XLT 3.5-L V6)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"When starting up from a stop, could feel a clunking before and during the transmission shifting. Noticed 6/23, took 2 months to get an appt for diagnosis, 10 weeks in the dealer shop for it to be rebuilt."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Ford Explorer Limited 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

Anonymous, FL (2018 Ford Explorer Limited 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Air or water leaks

"My mother purchased the vehicle in part because it has a sun roof. About a month after purchased, the shade would no longer close (apparently it had some sort of short in the system which my brother, who has worked in car electronics for 20+ years, identified and fixed so we wouldn't have to go to the dealership). Mom ignored the issue for about 3 months, and about a month after it was fixed it started leaking after a very big storm. As far as we can tell, the weather seals around the front of the window had deteriorated badly, though we still don't know why. This could have been a huge electrical disaster though, as it started pouring water directly over the middle of the front dash ... where the built in touch-screen and all the environmental controls are. Thankfully we had a big blanket in the back seat that we used to protect everything until we found a bucket to catch any further leaking and plastic to better protect the electronics. It's not a great design having a sun roof positioned in a way that a problem with the weather seal could destroy the electronics. :("
