    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Backup or other camera/sensors

"I had to take the Ford Explorer in several times repeatedly to get forward to acknowledge that there was an issue with the back up camera about 50% of the time when you shift it in to reverse the camera instead of coming on would just display a blue screen. Having a major back issues I was really counting on the camera system to work properly. The technician told me that Ford knew that the cameras were bad on a large amount of the explorers and some of the Mustangs and was working to get replacements from the original provider. However, the technician also told me that there was cameras readily available. The Ford refused to install because they didnt want to pay the difference in price so I had to live with this issue for three years!"

Anonymous A., CA (2020 Ford Explorer ST 3.0-L V6 turbo)

"The head unit had to be replaced radio, phone and navigation all quit working. Have had explorer in 4 times with the blank blue screen for the back up camera. Still waiting on new camera to be replaced"

Anonymous, IL (2020 Ford Explorer Limited 3.0-L V6 turbo)
    Display screen goes blank

"The Ford sync infotainment system completely went out on me. It was intermittent for a while and the dealership refused to believe there was a problem until it finally completely went out. Luckily I had bought an extended warranty maintenance plan when I bought the car, because this was not covered under the vehicle warranty and would have been many thousands of dollars."

Anonymous A., CA (2020 Ford Explorer Limited 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"APIM module failed. 3 weeks at dealer to diagnose and eventually fix. Appraise was failed unit and faulty software update"

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"TSB-20-2305, harsh 7-7 gear dpownshift. Our Explorer was covered under the recall for this repair, but the Ford dealership in Stuttgart, AR took 9 months to resolve the problem. Reported in March, they set an April appt to diagnose, ordered a transmission and had us bring it in to wait for a transmission bay July 31, 2023. Then we basically waited until February of 2024 before we could pick it up. Then had to take it back for a week because they didn't tighten the starter cable tight enough. I kept in touch weekly, they kept promising to "get to it", then they got it in and it was skipping 4th, had to take it back out and put a missing snap ring on a valve piston... All in all, I think they removed/installed the transmission 4 times, the transmission itself was shipped new from Ford, then assembled, installed, removed, checked by technician, re-installed, driven, removed, sent out to independent shop, re-installed, driven, noise from flexplate, transmission dropped and new flexplate/starter installed, transmission re-installed, then we picked it up, when it was warm the push-button start would work first time, in the morning or if it was cold outside (this was in February) it would start after pushing start button a random number of times. Attempting a remote start through FordPass would throw an error code ... turned out to be a loose starter connection. Since March it has performed flawlessly ..."

"very rough transition between gears. Known issue with service ticket. covered by warranty and works well since repair"

Anonymous, MD (2020 Ford Explorer XLT 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Loud transmission jolts and sounds while driving."

Anonymous, KY (2020 Ford Explorer Limited 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Within the first two years, the transmission had to be rebuilt. Before it was fixed, I was unable to drive it."

    Anonymous A., WV (2020 Ford Explorer 3.0-L V6 turbo)

"Well known problem, abrupt 7-6 downshift started at about 62k miles. Ford still covered most of rebuild cost although out of warranty."

Anonymous, MN (2020 Ford Explorer XLT 2.3-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Exhaust leaks

"The passenger side exhaust manifold developed a crack. Likely from higher rpm engine tilt and not enough flex designed into the system. With the leak, the engine idles rough in colder weather and as a result, the heat shield has started to rattle at lower idle rpms."

Anonymous, MD (2020 Ford Explorer ST 3.0-L V6 turbo)
    Loose/rattling heat shield

"The rattle has resulted from an exhaust leak that caused the engine to rough idle and shake the exhaust system and cause the heat shield to vibrate at lower rpms."

Anonymous, MD (2020 Ford Explorer ST 3.0-L V6 turbo)
    Other/unsure

"check engine light was on and they kept the car in the shop for 10 days before they figured it out"

Anonymous, FL (2020 Ford Explorer 3.3-L V6 hybrid)

"Police Utilty Hybrid. Consistent and ongoing charging system faults. In the past month, this error has occurred anytime the vehicle was driven for more than 200 miles at a time. When the error occurs, restarting the vehicle will clear the code for about 10-15 minutes before it reappears. After the 1st time, the dealership replaced the starting battery but that did not solve the problem. The last dealer diagnosis called for the replacement of the battery control module. Haven't been on a trip since that was replaced so I don't know if that fixed the problem. We have four other hybrid Explorers in our fleet and they have all experienced this charging system fault. At this point, I don't have a lot of faith in Ford's ability to build or repair vehicles. Out of the 15 Ford Explorers in our fleet, 4 are currently at the dealer's service dept. One for it's second engine replacement in as many months."

Anonymous A., WV (2020 Ford Explorer Base 3.3-L V6 hybrid)
    Pipes

"Exhaust pipes would vibrate between 1500 and 1800 RPM. Ford redesigned the position of the flex pipe as a resolution. I paid $700 to have one side replaced. I still feel the vibration but haven't paid to have the other side replaced yet so I can't be positive this is a total solution."

Anonymous, PA (2020 Ford Explorer ST 3.0-L V6 turbo)

    Driveline vibration

"I had to replace the drive shaft due to a hormonic vibration I was getting at a constant speed above 65 mph. This also resulted in having to replace the main seal in the transfer case which was leaking."

Anonymous A., MN (2020 Ford Explorer Platinum 3.0-L V6 turbo)
    Driveshaft or axle

"I think the slipping transmission and rough shifting may be connected. I'm not sure how to describe it but the vehicle has never accelerated smoothly. It is jerky and uncertain, sometimes more recently having to give it extra gas to move which, in my opinion, is not safe. This is an ongoing issue with no resolution."

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.
