The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Ford Focus owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Gear selector or linkage

"The stickshift could move, but it did not change gears, like is was totally disconnected. The car had to be towed to the dealer."

Anonymous, ME (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Other minor transmission & clutch problem

"At least twice in the last 12 months selected gear did not engage. Repeated gear changes solved problem."

Anonymous A., CA (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Rough shifting

"From a stop the transmission "chatters" while finding the appropriate gear before about 20 mph when it get above 3rd gear then it smooths out and drives fine. this is why we only use it for road trips with little stopping and starting."

Anonymous A., (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The car when bringing it up to speed sometimes doesn't get to the proper speed very fast and is jerky, almost like a manual transmission that someone doesn't know how to drive. To fix, we need a new transmission but that is more expensive than what the car is worth. We have ordered a new car and just drive this car locally now, will not take it on the highway. The transmission was replaced once under warranty, but we would have to pay to have it replaced for a second time. We should have listened to Consumer Reports when you said that you would have recommended this car except for the transmission. We will take your advice more seriously in the future."

Anonymous A., MO (2014 Ford Focus Titanium Unsure)

"The focus shakes and shutters on hills. It's been doing this since about a year after we bought it."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Same as previous. It shifts rough when it hesitates"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Slipping transmission

"From day one the tranmission slippage has been a problem and never repaired correctly."

Anonymous A., NV (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission stopped working even though engine running. Required towing and expensive repairs."

Anonymous A., IL (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This is part of the same problem discussed previously. Ford has refused to repair this problem but has agreed to reimburse the owner out of pocket money for repairs up to $2000 +- For the time being I am just living with this problem."

Anonymous A., (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Transmission often shuddered and felt like it wasnt engaging at low speeds. Car was still drivable but uncomfortable"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Transmission computer

"The TCM had a memory fault error. It would be fine shifting and then it wouldn't when you were going above 45 mph. The TCM was replaced under warranty. Then I had to train the new TCM with my driving habits."

Anonymous, IL (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"automatic transmission would not engage reverse. Shifter could be moved but car would not move backwards, only forward. Forward shifting was also affected as if shifting from second to forth skipping third gear. Manufacturer had extended replacement coverage on transmission control module which was replaced at no charge and seems to have corrected the problem."

Anonymous A., KS (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It randomly slips, rpms spike, very scary. We cant drive it long distances and avoid highways. Nothing to be done the transmission is just a bad design."

Anonymous, MI (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission control module failed, leaving the car unable to go into reverse. It was at the dealer for two weeks waiting for the part. However, the part was replaced for free under a manufacturer extended warranty program"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Done by dealer based on code when the automatic clutch was replaced."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Transmission sensor or solenoid

"BACK THREE TIMES TO BE REFLASHED, SENSOR REPLACED"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Clutch replacement

"Third time the automatic clutch was replaced under warrantee and it is slipping again so it will need a 4th this year."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"We had 2 prior cloth issues. None in the last 12 month."

Anonymous, TN (2014 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch problem along with transmission problem"

Anonymous A., IL (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Other major transmission & clutch problem

"Shortly after we bought the car the transmission started having problems: rough and not shifting up or down. We took it to the dealer and they replaced the Control module. It worked for a few years then happened again and again we had the Control Module replaced. In 2022 it started to act up again but by the time they were able to see it, it was almost undrivable. It died in their parking lot when I dropped it off, then it took 3 months to get the part. Currently it is acting up again and I can't get an appointment because their transmission guy is on leave. I'd like to sell this car but it needs to be fixed first."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The main issue is the hesitation in the shifting and the car doesn't always want to "go""

Anonymous, OH (2014 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission control module (TCM) never works well. Eventually burns out the clutch early. Then it will have issues calibrating and caused the car to be unable to start due to a programming error. Ford will reflash but there is no fixing this issue."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Torque converter

"I brought the 2014 Ford Focus back to the selling dealer shortly after I bought the car. I made an appointment with the dealer to have the car looked at (Jack Byrne Ford of Mechanicville, NY.) I waited in the showroom. I was called to come to the service department and told that since I had chairs in the back seat they could not work on my car. (I had two "fold up walkers" on the back seat NOT chairs. In other words they did not want to work on the 2014 Focus for transmission problems. This was the third New Vehicle purchased from this Ford dealer by the way. The dealership has since been sold and they called me to try to sell me another car. Needless to say I intend to take my business elsewhere. I have a useless vehicle that sits unused in my driveway."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"We purchased the car with 24k miles in 2016. By the time the mileage hit 29k, the torque converter needed replacing but was covered under warranty. We had to have it replaced again around 75k-80k miles under warranty. Then we needed to have it replaced again at 99k miles but we were out of warranty because we were past the 5 year mark, but we were under mileage. Ford knows it is a known common issue, but they refuse to recall it. We've been driving it with a bad converter. It hasnt left us stranded but it might some day. It's too expensive of a repair because of the value of the car. We plan on driving it until the wheels fall off. It currently has 161k miles on it."

Anonymous, MI (2014 Ford Focus SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Ford Motor Company has sold this Focus model for some years. I hope they have stopped. They fully know that there is a major problem with the transmission and went ahead and kept selling these cars anyway, and not at heavily discounted prices either. I have had the transmission replaced twice since buying the car and am told I still have one more replacement from them for a certain amount of time or mileage. I have signed up for the class action lawsuit over this car and hope they are very successful in suing Ford and getting everyone who purchased these cars some measure of satisfaction. When the transmission begins to fail it has issues like making the car shudder or shake, it hesitates before proceeding after a stop (which in my opinion could be life threatening, especially merging onto a freeway etc). To make matters worse I was a new widow when I had to buy this vehicle and was in no state to be super careful after caring for a husband dying of cancer for eight years. And if this all wasnt enough, I went to pick up the car after they cleaned and detailed the car since it had been used as a demo for the 2014 season, and the accountant asked me into her office and told me she needed me to pay an extra little bit more than $200 because she clicked the wrong box the previous day when I sat with a friend and answered questions about myself like drivers license and whether I wanted a car care package and at what level. Being thrown off by this strange request and still exhausted from taking care of my dying husband I acquiesced when she told me her boss would blame her and take it out of her pay cheque and maybe even fire her. Looking back I wish I had been more logical and told her that it was her problem not mine and that I wasnt paying a penny more than the already over $24000 I paid for the car, then got up, demanded my keys and left."

"This is from an email I sent to the dealer: Ford Focus 2014 extended warranty coverage I received your letter dated June 19, 2023 about Ford's decision to extend the warranty coverage on the TCM (transmission control module) on my vehicle. I was delighted as I was beginning to experience the same symptoms that I had experienced in 2016 which Ford repaired under warranty. I booked an appointment at Advantage Ford to have the TCM replaced on the car, which I bought new in 2014, and it currently has 51,000 kms on the odometer. I dropped the car off at Advantage Ford on Wednesday night so the car would be ready when the mechanics were ready the next day. I received a text message from Ford confirming the work to be done, i.e. The TCM replacement and the rear brakes. This was at 08:49 in the morning. At 15:25 I texted to inquire if the car was ready. I received this reply: Just waiting for our transmission specialist to get me a diagnostic on what the car needs. I then asked if they had replaced the TCM. Then Alex called me right away and advised that the car needed a new clutch. So I don't know what happened from waiting for my tech to advise, then a minute later by phone it needs a new clutch. Alex advised that a new clutch would cost me $3,700. I asked if the brakes were done. No. Again, this was at 15:30 and Advantage Ford had the car since they opened. I don't know why it took so long for them to let me know what was going on. I was quite annoyed. In that case, I will pick up the car as is. I asked Alex how is it possible that a 9 year old car with only 51,000 kms needs a new clutch. He suggested it might be driving habits. Well, if a 64 year old retired accountant can wear out a clutch in a car with automatic transmission driving back and forth to curling clubs in Calgary over the past 9 years, I really don't think the automatic transmission is built Ford tough. Do you think I'm burning doughnuts in the parking lots? I would suggest a rather very serious flaw with the automatic transmission. This car already had one transmission recall (recall 15B22B, performed on 11/09/16) so it has a history of transmission issues of which Ford is aware. It's truly surprising that Ford, a company that has been building cars for over 100 years, is having difficulty producing basic components reliably. I would like Ford to expand the scope of the warranty extension to include all components of the automatic transmission, including the clutch."

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
    Summary:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
    What should you do:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

The excessive vacuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Summary:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.
    What should you do:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.
