    Ford Mustang First Drive
    Introduction
    Though updated only modestly since its 1999 freshening, this rather primitive rear driver continues to tally surprisingly strong sales. The base model's 3.8-liter V6 generates more noise than power. The 4.6-liter V8s are much stronger and more in character with the car. Unfortunately, only the top-of-the-line SVT Cobra version gets an independent rear suspension. The manual transmission feels neither slick nor sporty. The front seats aren't especially comfortable, and neither one scoots forward to allow for easy access to the rear. Adults won't be happy there, but then rear-seat comfort isn't what this coupe is all about.
