The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"The DEF system has either defective software or defective sensors. When towing the DEF system uses excessive DEF fluid. Also the system that estimates the distance you can go before you run out of DEF and going into limp mode (speed limited to 55 mph) is 100% wrong all the time. The gage that shows how much DEF you have is wrong pretty much all the time. It will sometimes go from showing 3/4 full to empty in 10 miles. Then it starts counting down the miles you can go until the vehicle goes into limp mode (speed limited) The estimated miles to go is always wrong by a big margin. I took it into the dealer and they replaced the DEF tank and sensor. It made no difference. It makes me think the software that tracks and calculates the DEF level and miles to empty is flawed. I have talked to the service manager and the GM Certified mechanic who worked on the truck and apparently GM has no answer for this issue. I have several friends who own 3.0 liter diesel half tons and they are all having the same problem. The dealer gave me a copy of the technical service bulletin telling me how and when to refill the DEF tank and that was completely useless. GM needs to get their arms around this issue. I have friends who have traded their otherwise great GM trucks in for another vehicle over this DEF issue. It is absurd that GM cannot fix this problem. The DEF system on GM HD's seems to work fine. I can't understand why they can't fix this"

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission rebuild or replacement

""I noticed there was hard shifting and sometimes sluggish acceleration. One day while on the interstate I heard two loud thuds. The truck loss power and began to decelerate. I made my way to the road shoulder before losing all momentum. I looked underneath the truck to find transmission fluid dripping and the undercarriage covered in it. I thought I may have hit something in the road. I called a tow service and had the truck taken to a GMC dealer. I was told that transmission body had a crack in it and it was covered under warranty. It then took the dealer three weeks to make the repairs. While waiting to get my truck back, I did a little digging around to find out if anyone else had this problem. I learned that many people have and that GM knows about the problem with their 10-speed transmission and instead of recalling them, they are dealing with it on a case by case basis. My transmission failure occurred at 16,999 miles. I am fortunate that the truck is still under manufacturer's warranty. However, there are many who are no longer under warranty and have to foot the bill themselves.""
