    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2008 Honda Civic owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

"Had to replace with new A/C Condenser and Compressor. Still doesn't work great. Also, clearcoat peeling was not covered in the recall (my color, which is crap because all others were). Had to pay for all new paint job."

Anonymous, OH (2008 Honda Civic Si 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Air doesnt work taking to dealer 8/12"

Anonymous A., PA (2008 Honda Civic LX Unsure)

"AC worked with instant cold air for about 5 minutes and then fade to no AC in 2022. It got fixed June 23. Compressor clutch coil. I also had an AC problem in 2016. AC relay fixed it."

Anonymous A., BC (2008 Honda Civic Si 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Stopped working altogether, despite still having a full charge of coolant. This has happened every 2 years for 6 years, deeply annoying and expensive on an otherwise reliable and enjoyable car."

    Anonymous A., KY (2008 Honda Civic 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The AC compressor in these models is located low on the engine, forward, right side, where it is at risk of being exposed to road dirt, salt, etc. The AC clutch has failed due to this exposure. The repair shop this is a routine, expected, and frequent failure, due to the poor design choice of where to locate this unit. Due to the age of the car, we didn't bother getting it fixed."

Anonymous A., ON (2008 Honda Civic DX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Condenser

"Had to replace with new condensor and compressor. They had quit working totally."

Anonymous, OH (2008 Honda Civic Si 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Refrigerant leaks

"Worn seals in the air conditioning's refrigerant hose couplings allowed the refrigerant to leak."

Anonymous A., CA (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Steering And Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Alignment

"There was no serious problem with alignment that I noticed but my car was diagnosed as being out of alignment so I had it fixed."

Anonymous, MO (2008 Honda Civic EX)
    Other steering/suspension problem

"The problem with the rust in the rear stabilizer bar links was diagnosed around a year before I had it fixed, the mechanics told me it was not urgent when originally diagnosed, but that it should probably be dealt with within a year. The car is a Massachusetts car (lifetime), and so rust like this is not surprising. It's more surprising to me that the car has not been rusting out underneath, although the metal straps that secure the fuel tank also had to be replaced. I did have oil sprayed on the undercarriage to try to prevent more rust, as I am a car enthusiast, and between the responsive engine and great driving dynamics, I love driving the Civic. In answer to your question on the next page, I'm hoping to keep the Civic for as long as I am able drive (possibly the next 20 years), and I'm hoping to get significantly beyond 300,000 miles. Based on the mileages I see on the Facebook site, "Mileage Impossible," where people write about their high mileage vehicles, I think this is within reason."

Anonymous, MA (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Power steering

"Failed power steering fluid line, due to rusting out. The replacement part was hideously expensive (over $600 for a steel tube!). The garage fabricated a new one."

Anonymous A., ON (2008 Honda Civic DX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Crank shaft pulley failed at 85,000 miles, rendering the vehicle inoperable and damaging the tensioner and drive belt. All had to be replaced. Seems very early in the vehicle's service life to require this kind of repair."

Anonymous A., TX (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Power steering leaks

"Leaking started small at the end of 2023. It didnt appear to be an oil leak. I meant to get it checked but put it off. The leak got larger. I took it a Honda dealerships service center. They suggested several possibilities. I first had cam shaft plugs replaced. Still leaked and the leak was progressively getting worse. Got the power steering pump replaced in Feb. 2024 and it hasnt leaked since. worse."

Anonymous, MO (2008 Honda Civic EX)
    Tire wear is uneven

"Uneven tire wear has been a problem since purchasing the vehicle. Forces replacement before tread wear warrants."

Anonymous, WI (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Muffler

"Side of muffler rusted through and began to get louder than normal. Changed muffler and sound is back to normal."

Anonymous A., OH (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Other/unsure

"tires maybe flat spotted, creating a thumping sound."

Anonymous, MI (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Air bags not functioning and no part available according to honda"

Anonymous, NY (2008 Honda Civic Unsure)

"The fuel door did not close, and needed an expensive repair to be fixed."

Anonymous, OH (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Pipes

"Exhaust system needed replaced due to age. Was expected. First exhaust maintenance. 15 years of use."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Master cylinder

"This was a normal wearing issue."

Anonymous A., OK (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Other brakes problem

"I initially noticed when parking that the front wheels seemed not to be turning freely. I ultimately got out of the car and felt the wheels in the middle, and discovered they were slightly hot. I took the car on the freeway for a couple of miles, and they got very hot. I knew the brakes were sticking because I'd had the same problem nearly 40 years earlier on the first car I bought (used), very soon after I bought it. This was an expensive repair, nearly $800 for both front brakes (the rear brakes did not have this problem)"

Anonymous, MA (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"After a routine replacement of brake pads, the brakes were not operating normally. It was determined that the brake booster had failed and needed to be replaced."

Anonymous, TX (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Air or water leaks

"Water leak through door when it would rain and it caused very wet carpet and led to mold. Took over a year to figure out the issue."

Anonymous A., CT (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Seals and/or weather-stripping

    "Visor broken again after recall"

Anonymous, TX (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Squeaks or rattles

"A couple months ago I kept hearing a strange sound when driving on the freeway. It wasnt a metal sound. Then when I got off the freeway & started to drive through the backstreets to home I heard this terrible thumbing & it felt like I went over a large board or something, so I pulled over. I looked back at the road & this huge black rubbery mass was sticking up across the road. Fortunately, no one was behind me & I was able to move it off the road & get it into my trunk. The underneath covering of my car had come off, just one part of it, but it was still quite large. Had that happened on the freeway it would have caused a very serious accident."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"The car shut down while being driven in October 2022 and had to be towed to garage. The starter cable was repaired. The tensioner assembly was then replaced as well as the tensioner bolt. Car was collected on November 4th, 2022. On 27th March 2023 car broke down and was wrecked to the Garage, the Belt Tensioner was again replaced and collected March 29th 2023. On August 14th a noise now familiar was detected and car returned to Garage where the Serpentine Belt was removed and a new one installed. I was informed that the car cannot be repaired. In November 3023 I again heard the noise and the car cut off, I consulted another Garage who informed me after checking the engine that a new one was required."

    Anonymous A., (2008 Honda Civic)
    Head gasket

"significant oil leak due to head gasket"

Anonymous, AB (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, TX (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Started about one year ago. Various spots on the body where paint is fading and/or fallen off."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Engine mounts

"engine mount failed causing excessive vibration , rough ride and noise"

Anonymous, AB (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    Other electrical system problem

"The dashboard lights are buggy (various portions fail to light, like missing bulbs) and the fuel gauge (which is digitally represented) misrepresents the balance of fuel in the tank. We were told this is a "classic" problem for Honda Civics of the era (by a number of mechanics at different shops) and requires you to replace the control board for the dash, which has to be done by a dealership because of the coding and odometer data (stored in the unit; has to be coded into the new unit by the dealer or your odometer - which is digital - will misrepresent your mileage). Fairly expensive fix that doesn't always work. It didn't for us. The whole dash will properly light up now but the fuel gauge is still weird and unreliable. Have to go by miles driven."

Anonymous A., TX (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Clutch replacement

"Good service but clutch made 133000 before replacement."

Anonymous, KS (2008 Honda Civic 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Fuel pump

"The civic has so many miles on it that most all of these problems have experienced are due to normal wear and tear. We had to replace the fuel pump in my only complaint about that is how much it cost to do that. It cost us over $900 to have it replaced and one of the reasons because the fuel pump is located in the gas tank so the mechanic had to drop the gas tank and go through all of that and so it just took a long time and it was expensive"

Anonymous A., OK (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control.

"The relay that controlled the air conditioning compressor failed."

Anonymous A., CA (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Electrical

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery replacement, hybrid battery related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, spark plugs and wires failure, auto stop/start.

    What Owners Say

    Starter

"Starter went bad and had to be replaced"

Anonymous A., MO (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.
