    What Owners Say

    Master cylinder

"Replaced the master cylinder after pedal went to the floor after hard braking"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)
    Other brakes problem

"The problem is the when going to brake the brake pedal does not engage and the pedal goes down like pushing through air and just barely grabs at the end. It feels like the brakes are not working when this happens. Afterwards, the brake pedal is mushy and soft and just grabbing to stop at the bottom or close to the floor of the car. This problem has happened 3 times. The dealer and 2 independent car mechanics were not able to replicate the problem. New front brakes were done twice, new front rotors were completed, and a new master cylinder was installed. However, the problem did happen again after that. It is assumed that it might be with the ABS system. However, the ABS part is not available anywhere to be purchased, and if an order is placed with Honda there is no estimated arrival for the part. The car has been driving for the past few weeks with the brakes working, yet they are not trusted to be 100% or that the problem is solved and will not come back."

    Anonymous, CA (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"I took the car to Townfare Tire to get an alignment because I bought the tires there. They said they couldn't do the alignment because they couldn't loosen one of the bolts. I took it to a local tire place and they gave me a shopping list of items with the steering linkage that needed to be repaired before the alignment could be done. I had the work done at the garage of a non-profit company I work with and it was about $1200 to do all the repairs. I was told that considering the 12 years of winter weather the vehicle has seen, this was not too unusual."

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Oil leaks

"I experienced premature alternator failure and constant spark plug fouling, making the vehicle inoperable several times. After a long Odyssey (pun intended), I discovered the issue and fixed it. Apparently Hondas with the 2nd gen vtec engine have an issue with their variable cylinder management system -- this system shuts down engine cylinders when they're not needed, in order to boost gas mileage. Unfortunately, the way that the system works causes oil to leak past the piston ring of the shut down cylinder into the combustion chamber, burning the oil. It also causes the rocker arm valve to leak. These leaks cause me to burn tons of oil (almost went dry!), foul my spark plugs, and destroyed my alternator by dripping oil onto it. My mechanic couldn't figure out the underlying issue and said the problems were unrelated, and the Honda Dealership said I needed to replace my piston rings for $5,000. Luckily an employee at O'Reilly's Auto Parts recognized the issue and recommended "VCM Tuner", which is an aftermarket component that overrides the Variable Cylinder Management system. This worked as soon as it was installed -- no more oil leaks, no more fouled spark plugs. There is a TSB about the piston ring issue and the rocker arm valve issue, but apparently Honda isn't willing to acknowledge it's an issue related to their VCM system, because there isn't an easy fix for it and they need the VCM to hit govt gas mileage standards. Go figure."

If the seat tips forward during braking, it can increase the risk of injury.
    Summary:
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Honda Odyssey vehicles. The second row outboard seats can slide sideways to one of two positions. If a seat is placed between either of the two positions when attaching the seat to the vehicle floor, the seat will not latch properly to the seat striker, allowing the seat to tip forward unexpectedly during braking.
    What should you do:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a bracket to the second row outboard floor strikers, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2018. Owners may contact American Honda Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is S0G.
