    First Take
Hyundai doesn't scrimp on equipment in its midsized Sonata, small Accent, or in-between Elantra. For the price, the Elantra's cabin is nicely appointed. And handling is nimble. Otherwise, the car could use more refinement. The ride is jittery even on smooth roads, and the automatic transmission downshifts reluctantly, blunting engine performance; a five-speed manual is available. Plenty of engine, wind, and road noise enters the cabin. The front seats are supportive; the rear seat is hard but relatively roomy.
