What Owners Say

Other in-car electronics problem

"Central electronic LCD display in instrument cluster is dim/hard to read in daylight and almost impossible to see in direct sunlight. It displays odometer/gear position and other driver/trip data. Started working on this in April, but this was a lingering issue for several years. It started as varying display intensity, it would vary from almost unreadable to near full intensity or it would flicker, but eventually became dim and stayed that way. I tried to see what I could do myself at first as I have a technical background. Had no success and started working with a cluster repair facility. Eventually they replaced 12 blue backlight LEDs which restored full brightness. But then another problem developed, some LCD segments of the gear position readout were not working and some other parts of the display were missing as well. Several trips back and forth to the cluster repair facility over 2 months and this has not been resolved yet. I decided to take a break over the summer but intend to try and resolve this with the cluster repair facility in September."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"About 3-4 months ago, the dashboard lights quit working Not sure why. Asked about possible problems when had oil changed. Not by dealer."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Hyundai Elantra Blue 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Another lingering problem over several years I'm trying to solve. Randomly The left channel speakers cut out, this can happen when the car drives on rough pavement or randomly. If I turn up the volume to a high level the sound starts coming from the left channel speakers again. If I bang on the dashboard near the radio I can make the left channel speakers cut in & out, or if I jiggle the speaker harness at the back of the radio same thing. If I move the entire radio in it's mounting bracket same thing. I've removed the left door panels and checked the wiring and connections to the speakers, didn't find any problems. It's a 2 part radio, there is a control head that plugs into the radio body. I've used electronic cleaner in the knobs that control volume and left/right balance, did not help. I've come to the conclusion that either or both of these knobs are defective, or there's some problem in the body of the radio. I have found a control head at a wrecker and will be getting the matching radio body to replace the entire radio in my Elantra. Really hoping this will solve the problem"

What Owners Say

Other noises & leaks problem

"Actually, the worst problem is rust on the underside of the car. I was notified of a recall in the past for the undercoating. I took the car to a dealership in Green Bay, WI, for the recall. I moved to TN in 2016, so the car has not had salt exposure since then. Now, my mechanic tells me that the underside of the car is so rusted that it will likely break apart in less than a year. He could not tell that any undercoating was ever done."

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
Summary:
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
What should you do:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.
For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

STEERING
Feb 23, 2015
If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Summary:
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.
What should you do:
Hyundai will verify the proper operation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and update the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Apr 01, 2013
Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Summary:
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
What should you do:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.
