    EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

    What Owners Say

    Charging door problem

"Supposed to be able to manually open the charge door by pressing a specific point marked on the charge door. Never worked. Always need the key fob control."

Anonymous A., TX (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)
    Other electric/hybrid charging problem

"The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) relay failed after approximately 8 months of ownership. This was prior to the recall for all IONIQ 5 vehicles. Dealership fixed it under warranty, but it was unavailable for 2.5 weeks while waiting for parts/repairs. No recurrence of the problem since. ICCU failure causes the 12V battery to drain, because it cannot recharge it from the traction battery, and therefore the vehicle cannot be safely driven more than a few miles to a service center."

Anonymous, OR (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)

"Software update at dealer resulted in short in VCMS assembly and "Check Electric Vehicle System" warning. Error occurred in dealer lot. Car turned back into service and stayed there for almost a month. Dealer replaced VCMS assembly. Problem resolved."

Anonymous, TX (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)
    Problem charging in cold/bad weather

"During most severe hot weather, the charging system will turn off spontaneously [rior to completion. Usually occurs at home (220v ) with AC charger (ChargePoint). Will restart when unplugged and reconnected but requires a fan pointed directly at the charger handle to keep charging. ? overheated connection? Has not happened in cooler or cold weather."

Anonymous A., TX (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)

"Winter charging / usage - reduces usage by 30% (not the 10% as promoted)"

Anonymous A., ON (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)
    Problem with on-board inverter

"icc unit malfunctioned and was subject of recall.. problem was fixed at no cost"

Anonymous, MD (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Electric)

"The car kept stopping during A/C charging (Wall Mount Charger in my garage installed by Florida Power & Light, FPL). Told by FPL & Wall Mount Chargers that all Hyundai, Kia & Genesis have a problem with high amperage charging where the port (the vehicle ac/dc converter) overheats and stops the charge. The workaround is to reduce the AC charging current to moderate or low. Tried Moderate but charging stopped every 20 mins or so. Had to lower to low (approx 60% as I understand it). Unfortunately, instead of 5 hours to fully charge, it now takes very much longer. The dealer says they have never heard of this so problem still not fixed. I believe I will have to write to the CEO of Hyundai to effect repairs."

Anonymous, FL (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)
    Won't charge at home

"car quit charging on level 1 or 2 chargers in January. Took in for service and software update but that didnt work. Have an appt for another software update that is supposed to fix it next week"

Anonymous, CA (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)

"Warranty replacement of ICCU and 12 volt battery"

Anonymous, MS (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)
    Won't fully charge

"The ICCU main controller board for charging short circuited and "fried" itself. My home charger blew the power breaker stopping a serious fire hazard. The car was in service waiting for a replacement part for 6 weeks. For the past 10 months milage was reduced to 280 km from 440 km. Last week under a recall, new programming was installed and now milage is back to 440 km."

Anonymous A., ON (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)
Won't work with some public chargers

"With a failure of the ICCU the car was unable to charge on AC (level 1 or 2). Did not actually try a public L2 but it stands to reason it would not work. Dont know if DC fast charging was affected or not."

Anonymous, MS (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)

Anonymous, WA (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL Electric)

"the 12v battery needed to be replaced"

Anonymous A., NY (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited Electric)

"There was a problem with the system that charges the 12 Volt Battery from the main 800 Volt Battery. Because this controls many systems, computer wipers doorlocks and other things once I got a warning about the 12 Volt battery and had parked the car in my drive, I could not start and drive the car. I have a USB jump starter and with that, I was able to start the car and drive to Dealership for service. They had some trouble determining the cause but after a thorough check Hyundai USA issued a TSB and once the 12 Volt Battery was replaced and several Software Updates were installed, the car has worked without any further issue."

Anonymous, CA (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited Electric)

"The 2 year old battery died, while it should have lasted 5 years. The car becomes inoperable when this occurs, and can leave you stranded. Eventually, I replaced the battery (it was out of warranty), and discovered that the original battery was replaced by an AGM battery, due to the frequent drain from electronics on the battery."

Anonymous, ON (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited Electric)

"The 12v battery would sometimes not charge thus making the car inoperable. A recall fixed the issue."

Anonymous, QC (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited Electric)

"CarPlay is only available via usb cable. CarPlay went from intermediate disconnection to not connecting at all"

Anonymous, CA (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Electric)
    Hardware replacement

"The "ICCU" and the "Cluster" finally had to be replaced under a recall. This MAY have fixed ALL the numerous problems that I have had since I bought the car. I have had the car in for service more than a dozen times. The dealer is excellent in that they have provided 4 loaners over the past 2.5 years I have owned the car. Time will tell."

Anonymous, CA (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Electric)
    Other in-car electronics problem

Anonymous, QC (2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited Electric)

"The back hatch creaks a LOT. I have seen forums discuss a fix with electrical tape. Took into a dealership for a proper fix and they wanted $200 to assess the issue. Still creaks."
