    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Hyundai Tucson owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    Automatic climate control

"Has worked well till last month and the fan control lost 1 then 2 speed, then 3 speed, then 4 but if you turned past 4 it works. Put a stick in it so I could have AC. It is a known problem. Either the resistor or the whole unit is going out. The air is cold coming out at full blast. It is the control unit not the AC."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Hyundai Tucson SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Refrigerant leaks

"The AC was blowing but it was not cool. This was right after my catalytic converter was cut out and stolen, and the front end of my car was mushed in, also. I had purchased the extra wrap around plan at the Hyundai dealership in CT to cover "everything", but the Queens dealership said this was not covered. This lack of refrigerant happened immediately after I left the dealership (my car had been there for a month getting bodywork and catalytic converter replaced). I had also just gotten the back brakes done with them, and some other maintenance. Anyway, had to pay to get it fixed, was not covered by the extended Wrap plan that the dealer shoves at you. I still see moisture leak out onto the pavement on very hot days when I am running the AC but I don't know if that's normal or not."

Anonymous A., NY (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

    Door handle

"rubber button fell off that covers the unlock switch."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Other body problem

"In front of the moon roof is an all glass trim panel that runs the width of the car just past the windshield up to the moon roof. It is about 4 inches in size from windshield to the start of moon roof. It is completely broken and missing in most areas. Not sure if it was cased by rock chip (had to be pretty big rock) or flex of the vehicle. Because of how much is missing beleive it was caused by flex of car."

Anonymous, AB (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"Cheap ass OEM battery failed within a year."

Anonymous A., OH (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Other electrical system problem

"The back brake lights have some sort of wiring issue. Upon inspection, when you look at the wires, they appear burnt up and frayed. The right side was replaced already at the Hyundai dealership, but now I have the left side burnt out. The last time, the dealership did not charge me, but I think it's because I purchased the Wrap around extended warranty when I bought the car pre-owned at the dealership in Connecticut. The front headlight bulbs have to be replaced far more than I expected. They are LED lights, and granted, this is my first vehicle with LED headlights. but I was expecting them to last longer than 18 or 20 months. I can install those myself."

Anonymous A., NY (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Clutch replacement

"For several years the vehicle would shake when driving at low speeds. I knew this was to be expected based on CR reports, but it was supposed to be just minor. My issue became progressively worse, with the vehicle shaking violently at low speeds, esp in havey stop and go traffic. After two years of bringing up the issue with the service dept., they finally realized that in fact the clutch was bad and replaced it last May. The vehivle has been running well ever since."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Hyundai Tucson 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

    What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Rear hatch has a plastic piece above the door, paint quickly faded and became pitted/rough."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"Bought the car in 2018 with less than 10k miles. Car ran great. At 45k miles, engine died while driving the car. Hyundai had issues with my particular engine model - shards of metal mixing in with the oil. Hyundai replaced entire engine without question. Ran without any issues until the day the engine blew and has been running fine with the replacement engine. Unintended consequence is that I now get better gas mileage with the newer engine."

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2024 vehicles are holding up in 20 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, electric motor, EV charging, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical accessories. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.
    Summary:
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.
    What should you do:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
