    Introduction

    The tiny, front-wheel drive Hyundai Venue is a subcompact hatchback in an SUV’s clothing. It boasts a low starting price, good forward visibility, standard advanced safety features, straightforward climate and audio controls, and a practical interior that feels roomier than the car’s diminutive exterior dimensions would suggest.

    However, the Venue’s cheerful appearance can’t hide its budget underpinnings. The seats feel spongy and short on support, the bare bones interior and firm armrests are uncomfortable for long drives, and plenty of engine and wind noise make their way into the cabin. The stiff suspension lets bumps and jolts through even on roads that appear to be smooth. At least, handling is sort-of nimble and very secure when pushed.

    The Venue is best for around-town driving, thanks to easy maneuverability and a well-matched engine and transmission combination that responds quickly to driver inputs. We got 32 mpg overall. But its elevated noise levels and spartan seats keep the Venue from being a good road trip companion. Despite the Venue’s SUV-like looks, all-wheel drive is not available.

    Higher trim levels might add whimsical design details like unique embroidered upholstery accents and contrasting exterior trim, but they don’t change anything about how the car handles or drives.
