Although this version of the G37 was feeling a bit old, the Infiniti scored well in our Ratings. Highlights included very strong drivetrain performance, along with exceptional agility and handling. The G37 is very quick in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive form. The cabin is snug and two adults can sit in reasonable comfort in the back seat. Controls remained refreshingly simple to use.
Ride comfort is OK but not tops, the cabin is snug, and the trunk is a bit small. We got 21 mpg overall from our rear-wheel-drive G37. We also tested the less expensive G25, discontinued for 2013, which was slower, but returned better fuel economy.
For 2014, Infiniti launched the Q50 sports sedan, which was expected to replace the G37. However, Infiniti sold both cars simultaneously through the 2015 model year. The G37, which kept its name despite the brand's "Q" naming convention changes, was repositioned as a lower-priced sports sedan and treated to a price cut of several thousand dollars. A simplified options structure removed some previously available configurations, including the G37S sports package. While the Q50 got more high-tech content, the repriced G37 provided an attractive deal on a high-performing upscale sedan. It was later renamed Q40 and sold in limited numbers.
If it snows where you live, you'll definitely want the all-wheel-drive version. Either way, look for one equipped with the Premium package, as it adds features that are expected in an upscale sports sedan.
The cut in prices for 2014 made the G37 an attractive deal, but the drastic reduction of options availability limited choices. You could no longer get a Sports package or the six-speed manual on a G37 sedan. Blind spot monitoring wasn't available either, which was an increasingly common feature even on less-expensive mainstream mid-sized sedans.
