    First Take
The new M45 occupies a price-and-size niche between the midsized G35 and large Q45. It's a conservatively styled sedan that competes with the Lexus GS, Acura RL, and Lincoln LS. It shares many of the Q45's components but starts in the low $40s. Highlights include a gutsy 340-hp V8 that powers the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. Luxury appointments and high-tech features abound. It shares the Q45's adaptive cruise control, a laser-based system that maintains a set distance to the car ahead. Climate, audio, and other functions can be controlled by voice command. Although a long car, the interior is notably tight.
