Road Test

The QX80 is a large, plush, quiet, and well-equipped SUV that is cumbersome to maneuver and ponderous to park. The 400-hp V8 churns out admirable thrust, channeled through a seamless, seven-speed automatic transmission. Climbing aboard takes dexterity and it's hard to access the small third-row seats with dignity intact. A more serious detriment is emergency handling. When pushed to its limits, the QX80 leans a good deal and the tail can start sliding out disconcertingly. Though it didn't do anything dangerous, it bred very little confidence.

Model History
2025-
Current Generation

The redesigned QX80 moves Infiniti’s full-sized SUV further upscale, with premium features to rival the most prestigious competitors like large screens, Klipsch premium audio, second-row massaging seats, and the latest ProPilot Assist 2.1 active driving assistance system. Gaining 50 horsepower, the QX80 moves to a 450-hp, 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine, instead of the previous V8, with a new nine-speed automatic transmission. It can be had in rear- or four-wheel drive. An adaptive suspension is available. Infiniti claims there is more passenger and cargo space than before. Four trim levels see the comfort and convenience features climb precipitously, as the price likewise ascends well past six figures.

2014-2024
2014 Redesign Year

Infiniti changed the QX56 name to QX80 from 2014 onward. With the 2011 redesign, the big Infiniti moved to a new platform. It also became a plush luxury liner with a quiet, well-equipped cabin and a supple, steady ride. However, its high step-in, ungainly handling, and fuel economy of just 15 mpg overall are detriments. Standard safety features include stability control, traction control, and antilock brakes. Options include blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control with automatic braking and lane-departure warning.  Optional for 2014 is Infiniti's Backup Collision Intervention, which emits audible and visible warnings when objects are detected behind the vehicle during reversing maneuvers. The system can also stop the Infiniti to prevent collisions. For 2019, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection are standard. Other updates include standard blind spot warning and a rear-seat reminder system so parents don’t leave children behind when exiting the vehicle. Updates for 2022 include a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay compatibility, wireless smartphone charger, and a Bose sound system.
