Beneath its distinctive styling, the S-Type is a pleasant but unexceptional car offering a rather run-of-the-mill driving experience. It lacks the outstanding convenience, refinement, and performance of its major competitors. The 3.0-liter V6 doesn't feel very responsive at low revs, but the 4.2-liter V8 is smooth and powerful. The ride is supple and well controlled but can't match competitors like the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class in comfort and quietness. Handling is sound but unexceptional. The front seats are quite comfortable, but the rear seat is a bit cramped.
