Beneath its distinctive Jaguar styling, the S-Type is a pleasant but unexceptional car offering a run-of-the-mill driving experience. It lacks the outstanding convenience, refinement, and performance of its major competitors from BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz. The 3.0-liter V6 doesn't feel very responsive, particularly at low revs, but the V8 is smooth and powerful. The ride is supple and well controlled but can't match the BMW 5-Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class in comfort and quietness. Handling is sound but unexceptional. The rear seat and trunk are cramped.
