    First Take
The Cherokee is old-fashioned and trucklike. It's a good off-road vehicle, but it's noisy and uncomfortable on pavement, where SUVs spend most of their time. Cornering is clumsy, though secure. The six-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power, but it's noisy and thirsty. Still, it's a better choice than the Four. Selectable full-time four-wheel drive is optional. The front seat is too low, it doesn't slide back far enough for tall drivers, and its padding is too soft and too thin. The rear seat is also uncomfortable. What's more, cargo space is so-so.
