    First Take
The Cherokee is old-fashioned and trucklike. Its a good off-road vehicle, but its noisy and uncomfortable on pavement. Cornering is clumsy though secure enough at the limits. The standard Six delivers readily available power, but its noisy and thirsty. Selectable full-time four-wheel drive is optional. The front seat is too low and doesn't slide back far enough, while access through the small doors is difficult. The rear seat is cramped and uncomfortable, and cargo space is so-so. Replaced by the Jeep Liberty in 2002.
