What Owners Say
""Not sure what else to say. We had sudden, total, engine failure. The engine, out of the blue, started a loud banging, or tapping sound. Car was towed to dealership; total engine failure. They are putting in a new engine.""
Anonymous A., AL (2016 Kia Sorento LX Unsure)"The engine seized and gave out on the road. Fortunately thanks to CR I had insisted on the car's drivetrain and engine specially be "certified" BECAUSE I HAD CHECKED CR's FREQUENCY OF REPAIR DATA when purchased and after initially resisting, Kia replaced the engine."
Anonymous A., NY (2016 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)"Engine failure and under warranty. Replaced engine"
Anonymous A., TX (2016 Kia Sorento EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)""Engine, very suddenly, started a loud, very regular tapping noise. We had it towed, because the noise was so ominous. Diagnoses, total engine failure.""
Anonymous A., AL (2016 Kia Sorento SXL 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"the bolts holding the engine were too short and eventually came loose allowing the coolant to leak into the engine."
Anonymous, NY (2016 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)"Engine was replaced under warranty."
Anonymous A., FL (2016 Kia Sorento LX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)""Two days ago, my car stopped on me while I was driving it. When it was towed to the dealership, the Service Advisor said that my "engine disintergrated", "parts of the engine were on the ground under the car where it was parked". The Advisor is currently dealing with the corporate office. He thinks my car qualifies for a replacement engine. I only have about 90,200 miles on it. The powertrain warranty is still in effect until 100,000 miles.""
Anonymous A., TX (2016 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)"engine light came on and the engine stalled. Was able to pull into a parking lot and called a towtruck. The car was towed to a Kia dealer and diagnosed that the engine had to be replaced."
Anonymous, AL (2016 Kia Sorento Unsure Unsure)"There was an engine leak, that Kia knew about, and when Kia was advised of the problem, they replaced the engine, and extended my warranty"
Anonymous, CA (2016 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)"Started losing oil on the dipstick around 75000 kms"
Anonymous, ON (2016 Kia Sorento SX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Kia Sorento worked perfectly until 5/30/25. On trip to town, engine began to surge then back off. Would not stay in cruise control. Able to get to a car dealer in town (not Kia dealer). They diagnosed possible engine issue. Further diagnostics confirmed on 6/2/25. Kia dealer was contacted and my Kia was covered by a settlement recall for engine replacement. Replacement completed 6/27/25. Still awaiting reimbursement for month of car rental by Kia.Car is running great again."
Anonymous, OR (2016 Kia Sorento EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Engine was running great then suddenly at a steady speed of 50 suddenly lost power pulled into parking lot would not restart. Towed to kia dealership where purchased.they said it needs new engine. They said it meets criteria for warranty but kia has to check it first. After they approve it dealer said it will take months to get engine"
Anonymous A., GA (2016 Kia Sorento Unsure 3.3-L V6)"Engine had to be rebuilt at 120,000 miles due to factory defect and overheating"
Anonymous, ME (2016 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)"My 2016 Kia Sorento was burning oil and the manufacturer knew about this common problem with not only my vehicle, but many 2016 turbo Sorentos. I brought my Sorento into my local Kia dealership (not where I bought it, I bought it at another dealership close to my hometown. I called them but the General Manager stopped taking my calls!) to let them know of the problem WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. They gave me a hard time and they would not cover this engine defect. I had a choice of either scrapping this piece of garbage Kia Sorento or replacing the engine. The local Kia dealership quoted me a ridiculous price of approx $12,000! I ended up getting a new engine elsewhere from a trusted local mechanic for approximately $9000.00. I will NEVER buy a Kia (or Hyundai) vehicle again! They are truly pieces of garbage! Its worth noting again that this oil burning problem was a known problem to the Sorento for the year 2016 and I believe also 2017 for the turbo models. Buyer beware with Kia!"
Anonymous, ON (2016 Kia Sorento EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"One of the cylinders blew."
Anonymous, (2016 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)"Head gaskets blown; know problem with the specific engine yet Kia will not repair at their cost (I think there might be pending litigation such as class action). There was a Kia offer extended to repair/replace the engine yet my mileage was very slightly outside the specified mileage limit and, despite efforts of my local Kia dealership, Kia would not make an exception."
Anonymous A., CO (2016 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)"Faulty engine problems occured in 2025 after owning car since 2018. I was not told about faulty engine when I bought the car. After the engine failed and I had it towed. Computer code P1326 and I had it towed to dealer. I am waiting currently for what dealer is going to do. Check back with me in a month for how this turned out."
