    First Take
Several unique features were added to the redesigned Discovery last year. An optional Active Cornering Control feature helps keep it on an even keel in turns, although it makes for a stiff ride. Also new is an off-road hill-descent system and a self-leveling rear suspension. The V8 engine gained a few more horsepower, but it wasn't enough. Handling feels nimble but not precise with the active-cornering system, and in emergency maneuvers it can become unpredictable. Optional forward-facing third-row seats can hold two small passengers. The Discovery does prove its mettle off-road, where few SUVs venture.
