The Freelander is a small, unibody SUV with independent suspension and all-wheel drive. With traction control and an effective hill-descent system, it's the first car-based SUV capable of tackling on- and off-road duties with equal aplomb. Ride and handling are quite good, and the brakes are strong. The seats are comfortable, and the rear roomy. But many controls are awkward and confusing. The V6 is neither energetic nor fuel-efficient. The automatic doesn't shift smoothly. Interior quality is unimpressive, and road noise is pronounced at highway speeds. The air conditioning is marginal, but the power operated rear window is a nice touch. A convertible was added for '03.

To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.
