    First Take
Previously called the GS400, the V8 version of this model received a 4.3-liter V8 last year and was renamed the GS430. Both this engine and the GS300's 3.0-liter Six are smooth, powerful, and linked to a superlative five-speed automatic transmission. But these competent rear-drive cars lack the optimal ride-and-handling balance of competitors like the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Handling is competent but unexceptional; braking is excellent. The quiet interior features comfortable seating up front, but the rear bench is just adequate.
