    First Take
Lexus redesigned its GS sedan with the goal of making it sportier, but the new sedan falls short of the competition. The new 3.0-liter V6 is smooth and mated to a six-speed automatic, but it isn't as strong as the V6 from Acura and Infiniti. The 4.3-liter V8 continues in the GS430. Driving excitement isn't the GS' strength. The steering is slow and numb, and the car lacks agility. Each model offers a host of safety and high-tech features. The well-constructed interior is luxurious and most controls are convenient. However, passenger room is very tight and the driving position is flawed.
