    First Take
Priced at over $60,000, this posh luxury SUV competes with vehicles like the Range Rover, the Mercedes-Benz ML500, and the BMW X5 in the uppermost stratum of the SUV market. It's based on the big, imposing Toyota Land Cruiser--itself hardly plebeian, with its slick powertrain, comfortable ride, and quiet, nicely appointed cabin. Added features include a height-adjustable suspension, reams of real-wood interior trim, and a power-adjustable steering wheel. Like the Land Cruiser, the LX470 uses a smooth, strong 4.7-liter V8. It's also one of the few SUVs that manages to be both capable off-road and civilized on pavement. Electronic stability control is standard, as is full-time four-wheel drive. Generous cargo space and a folding 50/50 split third seat add versatility.
