    First Take
The AWD RX400h combines a 3.3-liter V6 with three electric motors and a battery system to produce 268 hp. It propels itself solely on electric power at low speeds. It has a plush interior, a quiet cabin, and a comfortable ride. Acceleration is smooth and strong, on par with some V8s. Overall fuel economy of 23 mpg is a moderate improvement over the 18 mpg we recorded in the conventional RX330. While the RX400h is an inviting blend of performance, fuel economy, comfort, and luxury amenities for those who don't mind paying a $6,000 premium over the RX330, buyers interested in hybrids only to save money may be disappointed. A front-wheel-drive version, carrying a lower price, is new.
