Introduction

The AWD RX 400h combines a 3.3-liter V6 with three electric motors and a battery system to produce 268 hp, and can propel itself solely on electric power at low speeds. AWD models use separate electric motors to power the rear wheels, eliminating the need for a driveshaft. It has a plush interior, a quiet cabin, and a comfortable ride. Acceleration is smooth and strong, on par with some V8s. Overall fuel economy of 23 mpg is a moderate improvement over the 19 mpg in our tested RX 350. While the RX 400h is an inviting blend of performance, fuel economy, comfort, and luxury amenities, buyers interested in it only to save money might be disappointed.
