    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2008 Mazda 3 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

    "AC quit working in midsummer."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Mazda 3 Unsure Unsure)

"A/C would work intermittently and blow hot air or not work at all. First repair shop said compressor was past life expectancy and needed replacement. Worked fine until end of summer. At the start of next summer, the issue began again and the first repair shop said the issue was a freon leak requiring removing the dashboard for a few thousand dollars in labor. The vehicle was taken to a 2nd repair shop and car was diagnosed as a leak in the 12" high pressure hose directly off the compressor which was only a few hundred dollars. Since then, there has been some intermittent issues of system shutting off, but the problem can never be solved at shop. The problem finally seemed to be solved when the car was taken in for other services and discovered a cracked spark plug which was causing the car to misfire. Mechanic wasn't sure how this was effecting the A/C."

    Anonymous, AZ (2008 Mazda 3 Sport 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"Complete failure of compressor, condenser and related hoses"

    Anonymous, CA (2008 Mazda 3 Mazdaspeed 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C compressor needed to be replaced after 17 years of service. Not bad."

    Anonymous, MO (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

""It may be normal wear and tear, but this was the third compressor replacement.""

    Anonymous, VA (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The A/C compressor failed in Spring of 2021. It was too expensive to replace so we have not repaired it."

    Anonymous, ON (2008 Mazda 3 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Condenser

    "Complete failure"

    Anonymous, CA (2008 Mazda 3 Mazdaspeed 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    Keyless entry

"Works so intermittently I have almost given up on the key fob which eats batteries"

    Anonymous A., ON (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Other electrical system problem

""Car stopped starting on occasion and then more frequently until it would not start at all. Took it to the dealer to diagnose. Turned out to be the control module similar to a motherboard in a computer which certain circuits pass through. It seemed to have some connections that rusted or corroded causing the short. The part was no longer available new from Mazda so the dealer had to source a re-manufactured one. It took about a week to get the part and install it. Cost around $1,000.""

    Anonymous A., WA (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.3-L 4 Cyl)
    Warning lights

""These lights of various colours go on & off all the time, such that you come to ignore them - as do the mechanics you take the car to""

    Anonymous A., ON (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Shocks or struts

"Several months ago the car developed a clunking noise when the front wheels went over road irregularities. Struts were replaced solving the problem."

    Anonymous, WI (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I consider this normal wear and tear for the mileage."

    Anonymous A., KS (2008 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"car needs struts; first time since owning in 2008"

    Anonymous, MI (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Anonymous, MO (2008 Mazda 3 Touring 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

    Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

    What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

""First noticed paint on the roof was failing 2019. Estimate to repaint roof was $1,500. Paint has continued to deteriorate and now 75% of roof paint has corroded. Recently noticed this is happening to top of driver door. Updated estimate to repaint in 2024 was $3000 (prior to door paint failing). This estimate was more than 50% of Blue Book value of car, so I've decided not to have any portion repainted. Note: I replaced the housings for both rear view mirrors (driver and passenger side) and rear spoiler in 2020 due to deteriorated paint. Also, I've seen similar roof paint failure in other Mazda 3 of similar year.""

    Anonymous, CA (2008 Mazda 3 Sport 2.3-L 4 Cyl)
