    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Apple CarPlay

"Apple CarPlay disconnects while still plugged in. Happens every second or thirds drive. It is fixed by unplugging the phone and plugging it back in."

    Anonymous, QC (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen freezes up

"The display screen turns off and restarts itself repeatedly when the car is hot or cold. Bluetooth connections must be restarted each time the display screen restarts"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen goes blank

"Heads up display is continuously resetting and makes all interfaces/navigation/radio unable to be used."

Anonymous A., CO (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring Unsure)

    "system continuously reboots"

    Anonymous A., TX (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The whole system crashes repeatedly. Can't listen to anything for long."

Anonymous, MT (2016 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)
    Heads-up display

""The display is on but does not work well and will randomly turn on the radio, raise the volume, etc.""

Anonymous A., CA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)

"It randomly receives button pushes when no one has touched it. There was a lawsuit about it and Mazda is suppose to fix it, but I haven't done it yet."

    Anonymous, 99 (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring Unsure)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The screen dies repeatedly and then restarts. Always dies when GPS requested"

Anonymous, MT (2016 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"Apple phone contacts no longer download for on screen choosing. (past 3 months)"

    Anonymous A., NC (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Bluetooth in this car has always been problematic. Phones which have been previously paired often take a while to get added to the bluetooth. Playing music / media on the phone through bluetooth will eventually (and randomly) disconnect. In some cases, this requires a the system to be fully rebooted to regain the bluetooth connection, despite the phone still showing the Mazda. In other cases, it is so bad that the car must be shut down completely and restarted before bluetooth will resume, and then it will last for some random amount of time from 5 minutes to 5 hours. Phone calls are especially problematic for this. When using the phone through the Mazda's bluetooth, it almost always drops in and out of bluetooth mode several times in a given call, and eventually stops reconnecting. The bluetooth is basically unusable. Note:This has been true for every phone, Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, that we have paired to this device."

    Anonymous, CA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The car stops pairing with phone and I'm forced to reset the system to pair again. Huge problem with happens constantly and I rely on phone for navigation since the navigation system in car, even with the newer update, doesn't work."

Anonymous, (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring Unsure)

"Phone pairing has been a bit inconsistent for many years, getting worse over time. Problems like the car saying a phone is connected, but music playing from the phone speakers. Also the infotainment system just can take a long time to load, including connecting a phone."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring Unsure)

"difficulty initial pairing and maintaining pairing. When it worked it worked well"

    Anonymous A., OR (2016 Mazda CX-5 Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"every time the system reboots, the phone disconnects from the car and then reconnects causing untenable phone conversations. Started about 12-15 months ago and has gotten progressively worse."

    Anonymous A., TX (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Bluetooth will no longer pair, dealer wanted 800 to fix""

Anonymous A., IN (2016 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)

"intermittent disconnects require a complete reset."

    Anonymous A., NC (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Radio

"In cold weather, radio does not stay on as it goes in and out. If I drove more miles it would be an issue. Except for radio issue, I would purchase again."

Anonymous, (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport Unsure)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Antilock braking system (ABS)

    Anonymous, NJ (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Other brakes problem

    "Left rear brake seized."

    Anonymous, BC (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Parking brake

"Right rear brake would sometimes not fully release after applying parking brake."

    Anonymous A., ME (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Electronic parking brake spontaneously malfunctioned when not in use. If parking brake is not used for a long time, the system performs a self-inspection, and after that the parking brake warning lights came on but car functioned normally. Took it to the dealership and they reset the brake and said everything was fine. Immediately after taking the car back home, we realized the parking brake was not fully releasing and it caused damage to brake rotor and pad. This problem just happened in the last week and car is currently at the dealership waiting for parts to replace right rear parking brake motor/mechanism as well as back brake rotors and pads. Very frustrating to have a $600 repair bill to fix a parking brake that we rarely need to use and shouldn't require electronics and motors at all - old-fashioned mechanical parking brakes worked just fine!"

Anonymous, IN (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring Unsure)
    Premature brake wear

"Rear brakes wouldn't completely disengage while releasing the parking braking (electric). That resulted in uneven and premature brake pad wear. A few times friction from not disengaged rear brakes resulted in the whole assembly getting very hot (approximately 800 - 900 F) after about 1.5 mile drive."

    Anonymous, AL (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""This was the second time I had to replace the rear brake pads and rotors in 9 years. I have only had to replace the front pads and rotors once, about two years ago.""

Anonymous, AB (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Rear Brakes wore off 1 side in less than 20,000 miles. The other side still had 60% left.""

    Anonymous, CA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Rotors

"Started roughly 3 years after purchase, took it to a dealer immediately, problem was quickly resolved"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring Unsure)

    "Rotors were warped"

    Anonymous, KS (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""The original rotors were scored, so I replaced them myself.""

    Anonymous A., OH (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Squeaking

"It was the right front brakes"

    Anonymous, MA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

""The A/C compressor failed while driving on a trip. This caused the serpentine belt to break. We were able to find a mechanic who diagnosed the A/C compressor was the cause of the belt breaking. He installed a new belt and disconnected the compressor so we could drive home. Once we got home, we had a Mazda dealer replace the compressor which cost about $2,300 total.""

Anonymous, CO (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Blower (fan) motor

"Squirrels put nuts into the fan and killed it."

    Anonymous, MN (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Condenser

"At winter the car would not provide heat. When we took the vehicle to the MAZDA dealer to check into the problem, it was determined that the condenser needed replacement. That solved the problem."

    Anonymous A., PA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Heater system

"heater core is stopped up.Mazda has a tsb on this issue"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Refrigerant leaks

"AC stopped cooling. Took to a mechanic who identified a leak at the bulkhead. Don't necessarily trust diagnosis, but was fixed by replacing freon hose."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Water pump and water pump belt had to be replaced. Coolant was leaking."

Anonymous, AL (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Unsure)

"Noticed during annual inspection and required replacing."

    Anonymous A., PA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Shocks or struts

""Right-rear shock busted through the top of its mount. The mount is a flimsy aluminum one, that the repair shop told me they see often on Mazdas. On the '3', they replace it with an aftermarket steel one that is stronger, but that was not available for my CX-5. So replaced both rear shocks and their top-mounts with the same flimsy OEM ones. Moreover, the front suspension's A-arms are rattling like crazy, I am just delaying their repair. Overall, the suspension components seem fragile across the board. I drive mainly urban, but never had such issues in my past 30 years of car ownership (mainly Honda, Acura and BWM).""

    Anonymous A., QC (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Front right struck was broken and was causing a lot of rattling, scraping noises"

    Anonymous A., PA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Water leaks in rear cargo area"

    Anonymous, GA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""The channels for the normal flow of rainwater to drain out got filled with debris, clogged and leaked inside the passenger area. This issue caused the floor to fill with water on the floor mats and needed to be cleaned out and the interior dried out which took about 4 days at the dealership. Frustrating problem but not unexpected since it is parked under a tree that drops needles. Lesson learned.""

    Anonymous A., WA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Easily fixed at repair shop. Drainage from roof was clogged with leaves, etc.""

    Anonymous A., GA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"During light to moderate raain (30 minutes or more), water will begin to collect on the Drivers Floorboard. Heavy rain will collect about 1/2" of water. It appears to be coming from the area of the Left Front A-pillar. No resolution at this time."

    Anonymous A., TX (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Seals and/or weather-stripping

""In the past year in heavy storms rainwater is entering the Mazda and pooling on the floor beneath the floormat. Did not notice and 1st because I usually drive another car and I do not drive at all in the kind of storms that it takes to overcome the existing ability of the car to drain away rain water. A recent heavy rain occurred and I noticed condensation on the windows days later. Seats were not wet and it wasn't until I lifted the floor mats on the passenger side that I noticed the carpet was very wet and a plastic compartment that housed the vin number on the floor was filled with water, overflow from the carpet? Nor really sure, will be taking the car to the dealer later this month.""

Anonymous, FL (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Squeaks or rattles

"Over the years, a squeak has developed in the back seat area that gets very obnoxious at times. We thought it was one of the latches that hold the rear seats up, but it happens even when the seat is folded down. We have no actual idea of what the cause is, and it's random enough we can't get the mechanic to isolate it for us."

    Anonymous, CA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Anonymous, CO (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

""I just replaced this car's battery for the second time in less than 2 years. Both times, other things went slightly askew - the bell that used to go off warning if you turned off the car without it being in park, the entertainment system randomly resetting once a week or so, the emergency brake turning on - or at least a warning about it - randomly after which everything is fine the next day. Then, without anything lighting up, the battery stops working. This time was particularly worrisome as my newly driving daughter is now the driver of that car. The battery is changed with a much higher quality battery this time. But we're actively watching out for this now""

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Cylinder head

"The car was bought used as a one owner with 90,000 miles and 12 month (10,000 miles) later had catastrophic engine failure do to coolant leaking into crankcase via the cracked cylinder head. The lack of coolant in the coolong system caused engine to overheat. The coolant leaked into oil lubricated moving internals of the engine. I selected this model make and year based on Consumer Reports specific recommendation. That was a big mistake for me. Used engine replacement cost $4,000. Paid 15,000 for the car and sold it to the garage for 6,500. I need a vehicle to get me to intended destination and not break down on the road no matter how well I care for it. This vehicle by far was the highest cost per mile to own of any vehicle owned by me. I bought it from a Mazda dealer and th car fax was good. Mazda quality falls far short of their sales and marketing."

    Anonymous, PA (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other major engine problem

"As I stated earlier, the engine will rev high after stopping and lunge forward. It happens occasionally but scares me. Dealer could not find anything wrong but there certainly is."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""The car has two fuel pumps: a low-pressure pump located in the fuel tank, and a high-pressure pump mounted on the engine. The high-pressure pump failed. The failure manifested itself in the engine hesitating when going uphill or under heavy acceleration. The pump was replaced at a local Mazda dealership, and we have had no problems since. Mileage at the time of failure was somewhere around 88k.""
