The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Mazda CX-5 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Android Auto

"Android Radio has often failed beginning 2023: while driving and/or at full stop without prompting or warning, it leaves current station begins scanning and takes multiple efforts to correct it. Also, screen prompts that existing station is already saved in system as if I triggered a request to save. Display often changes to an analog screen (dial). All that happens is very distracting while driving. Very disappointed about this costly situation: a failed infotainment system in a 3-year old car? To replace the system seems pointless: I believe it would have aftermarket-type issues - why would I want another of the same product? What if it doesn't effectively interface? This is an expense that will impact value when reselling/trading for another vehicle. A current class action suit for the infotainment system failures across many models is pending. Unsure if any relief for an owner is realistic expectation."

    Apple CarPlay

"Both Apple Car Play and blue tooth pairing take a long time. There are times when it takes 2-3 minutes for Apple Car Play to display as an audio source option."

    Anonymous, NY (2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes it would not connect to CarPlay. Other times it would simply go black while driving."

Anonymous A., TN (2019 Mazda CX-5 Sport Unsure)

"This setup requires a physical cable connection. Apple Carplay intermittently failed to connect to iPhone 13. Sometimes it would connect for a few minutes then disconnect. Sometimes it would disconnect after working for over an hour. Turning off the engine and restarting sometimes worked but not consistently. Purchased new Apple cables but that did not resolve the intermittent connection issue. Took the car to the Mazda dealer. The tech connected her iPhone and it worked. That was not surprising since it typically worked for a few minutes with my iPhone. Her test was not valid since it didn't last long enough for the problem to occur. Purchase new iPhone 16 and it has connected consistently. However, if the cable is connected to the iPhone before starting the car, Apple Carplay may not connect. Disconnecting and reconnecting the cable usually resolves the issue."

    Anonymous, FL (2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I connect my phone to car play and use google maps or Waze...sometimes it just quits which could be dangerous if I'm on the freeway and making decisions on lane and freeway changes."

    Anonymous, CA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    "does not work"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The car will not connect properly to the phone. The music will be playing then it stops playing through speakers but the phone is still playing music. I have to turn the car off to get Apple Music to play through my car speakers. Also sometimes the car toggle glitch while playing music. It the click screen buttons without me touching the pad."

Anonymous, VA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen freezes up

""The display screen on the infotainment system now frequently freezes up and will randomly beep and then change to a different screen display without me touching anything. This now happens almost every time I turn the system on and as a result, if I am using Apply Car Play for navigation, the screen disappears and I have to reset and start the process from scratch.""

    Anonymous A., OH (2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Ghost touch screen. The infotainment system has a mind of it's own. It makes it's own phone calls. Sometimes it freezes for 10-20 seconds. Sometimes stuck on "night" so can't see the display during the day. Very hard to enter an address for the GPS system. It beeps for no reason. These are problems reported in many Mazda models that have the some system."

    Anonymous A., FL (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display unit goes a bit crazy. The outline box starts uncontrollably and randomly clicks different items. We had to install an expensive "repair kit" which make it obvious this is a known problem. This is the second Mazda with this exact problem"

Anonymous, VA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)

"It's a known problem. The display just changes to something else, like navigation sound. I play SiriusXM radio and it'll just change stations with no warning. Seemingly random things like that happen occasionally, maybe every couple months."

    Anonymous A., NC (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes at start up the screen takes 5 minutes to come on, no rhyme or reason but cant use cameras etc until it comes on"

Anonymous, NE (2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Display screen goes blank

"The screen will go blank sometimes when connecting to Apple CarPlay using the cord. Bluetooth will stop working also."

Anonymous, VA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen seems to reboot, not connect to apple car play, or disconnect my phone if connected. This started in December of 2024."

    Anonymous, (2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The display screen would either go blank or it would just start to randomly flash screens various features. The Mazda dealership knew straight away what the problem was, and the fix cost $670."

    Anonymous, NY (2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""The day I bought it the display had problems. I repeatedly returned to the dealership because of the display going out, stuck spinning, navigation being wrong and stopping etc. I was told to remove the navigation card and to use Apple Car Play. That also would suddenly go black or not pair.It hasnt been resolved""

Anonymous A., TN (2019 Mazda CX-5 Sport Unsure)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Random issues with settings changing on own. Fast forwarding through music tracks. Being locked out of audio controls while processor plays "catch up" with previous selection entered into system."

Anonymous, PA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Music stations shuffle on there own."

    Anonymous, MA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, OK (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The system has a mind of it's own. Jumps from radio station to another and navigation cannot be depended upon. The system is broken and the class action suit does not address the issue."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Hardware replacement

"Ghost touch. Frequent in the last 6 months. Problem solved when screen was replaced."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Infotainment stem started changing functions on their own. Ghost touches."

    Anonymous A., MD (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

""The buttons jam. I dont use the entertainment unit, except for one station, because the buttons dont function""

Anonymous, MI (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Unsure)

"1. The Nav system took me to incorrect/invalid address 2. The Nav system very recently glitched out after having the dealership check it. Prior, it had not failed as badly as it is now. I cannot help but question whether they had caused further damage, thus, requiring a greater outlay of repair expense"

    Anonymous, (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

""Display screen delaminated. As a result, it activated touch-screen features randomly when started. The display had to be replaced. The repair folks indicated this happens frequently.""

    Anonymous A., CA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""At very slow speeds (moseying to a red light) or while stopped at a stoplight, the display screen will begin to do things on its own. It may begin to go through my iPhone's contacts, make phone calls (my Favorites seem to be the ones it calls), or it begins to go through the various menus. It prefers to go to the screen where you can select to turn off the display completely and it may do so... by itself. How in the world can a consumer figure out how to fix the display when it's set to be blank or black?????? Both issues are VERY frustrating. I was told that replacing the bad part is about $1,600 !!!!!""

    Anonymous, TX (2019 Mazda CX-5 Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Anonymous, AZ (2019 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I only bought the car in February 2025. Its a random problem and has happened 10-15 times. Sometimes I can tell that my searching on my phone (not connected to the car and not driving) is triggering the reactions. Other times, Im driving and it just randomly begins making selections, changing radio stations, zooming in or out on navigation or changing locations etc."

Anonymous, AZ (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""I'm experiencing the well-documented Mazda ghost-touch issue. It does not happen all the time, but will interfere with my CarPlay and pause music, change navigation settings, etc. Usually, soft-resetting the infotainment system fixes it, but not always.""

""Brakes were replaced 3 years ago, and again in April. Total mileage between the 2 was about 20,000 km. I personally drove 99% of those kilometres and I don't abuse the brakes so I'm disappointed that they required replacement again so soon.""

Anonymous, CA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""My major issue began when I noticed smoke coming from beneath the hood during a short drive. After inspection, it was determined that the cylinder head was cracked. The local Mazda dealer refused to allow warranty coverage since I was about 50 days after the 60 month time even though my car was more than 15,000 miles below the 60,000 warranty limit. The repair cost $4,700+ for a vehicle that was at about 45,000 miles! After contacting Mazda USA, a representative indicated they would speak to the local dealer and then follow up with me. After several weeks the rep emailed me back stating "they could reach their local dealer by phone"! I purchased this car because of the rating for reliability and other factors from CU. Needless to say, I will never purchase another Mazda product.""
