    Reliability

    Overall Reliability

The 2021 CX-5 has about average reliability compared to other cars from the same model year.

    Common Trouble Spot

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2021 Mazda CX-5 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Apple CarPlay

"A year ago the Apple car play stopped working. USB still charges and connects to play podcasts but thats it."

Anonymous, PA (2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes when Im listening to a station from my I-Heart play list, I lose the connection."

Anonymous, NC (2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Communication Doesn't always work. Volume controls dont work at times. Siri wont respond"

Anonymous, ME (2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Display screen freezes up

"The interface occasionally (but not rarely) does not respond. We use CarPlay most of the time, so I am not sure if it's the interface having trouble with that, but it will also not respond to steering wheel controls which it usually does. There is also a strange glitch that started about 6 months into ownership (purchased new): the selector knob (it's not a touchscreen, and we like the knob as it's safer) will work, but then on its own without turning further, the selection on screen will move down once or twice. If we correct the knob in the other direction, it will not jump in that direction. We asked for the Mazda service shop to look in to it, but they kind of shrugged it off as unimportant."

Anonymous, IL (2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Display screen goes blank

"It was approximately two years ago that I noticed that the screen went dark. I was heading back home from a long trip. After turning the vehicle off, then on, and the scree came back on. I mentioned it to the dealer on my next routine visit & he sujeste that I bring the vehicle back some other time. I didnt, since it didnt happen again until much later. Its happened again several times, but not often."

Anonymous, NC (2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen would be blank and unusable. Turning car off and back on doesnt work. Found shortcut online to resolve. Service department said couldnt recreate issue. Found no problem ughhh"

Anonymous, ME (2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This is already mentioned in the other complaint about the unified display system and interaction with CarPlay. The system does not have a reliable way to do a reset. Some people online have reported a three-button command that worked a few times to reset the system. However, the screen has gone blank (not a reset) on its own. A few times merely turning off the car, waiting, then turning it back on has resolved it. But if it's happened 12 times in 4 years, half those times it worked. The longest the problem persisted was about 3 drives in the car, and if it had persisted much after that or soon after it had happened again, I would have taken it back to Mazda's service shop. The system's problem is more often freezing or being unresponsive for some functions. But blank screens and the inability to reset it has been frustrating. Note that this is not the same as turning off the display. But when the screen has gone blank or freezes, turning it off and on has not worked."

Anonymous, IL (2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Infotainment system is distracting and ,therefore, dangerous. It requires taking your eyes off the road and has nearly caused collisions and driving over the line. Mazda has been dinged for this clumsy system for years and continues to use it. Next car will have touch screen."

    Anonymous A., PA (2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

""Every time I get in the car I have to repair my phone, a iPhone SE. It is the only phone needed to be paired, there are no other drivers and it will not stay connected.""

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Cylinder head

""This was a defect in the exhaust valve seals that caused excessive oil consumption. Valve seals replaced under warranty. Loaner car provided for the prolonged repair. Problem rectified, no further oil consumption.""

Anonymous, NC (2021 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Head gasket

"high oil consumption. The dealer replaced the head gasket and all cylinder gaskets. Extended warranty from Mazda. They are aware of these issues with Turbos."

    Anonymous A., FL (2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Other major engine problem

"Our family purchased a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature Turbo brand new in 2021. Unfortunately, this vehicle has had the well-documented valve stem seal defect, which is subject to a Mazda TSB. The repair was performed twice in 2024, but the issue came back. Most recently, the low oil pressure warning light came on, and when I checked, the oil was below the dipstick line. This is a vehicle with only 18,000 miles. The dealership said the next step would likely be a cylinder head replacement, which is an extremely invasive repair for a vehicle this new and low mileage. I have encountered others in online forums that have similar issues with the 2021 Mazda Turbo, and some have said their dealers tell them that this excessive oil consumption is "normal" and they just have to keep filling it more often between oil checks. I contacted Mazda Corporate and requested a goodwill buyback, as a long term Mazda owner. The Mazda Corporate response was that the Texas Lemon Law only covers the first 24 months of ownership and therefore I was not eligible. They said my only options were to either accept another repair or trade in the vehicle. While Mazda stated they will cover the repair under the settlement warranty, this doesnt restore my confidence in the long-term safety and reliability of the car. I am also not confident they know how to fix this issue since the repeated repairs have not worked. As a loyal Mazda owner since 2015, this experience has been deeply disappointing. The problem has come back despite multiple repairs under TSB, and Mazdas refusal to consider any resolution beyond further invasive work leaves me and other owners in similar situations with little recourse. Unfortunately, reliability is no longer something I can count on from Mazda."

Anonymous, TX (2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""I experienced low engine oil twice in between oil changes. The low oil condition was due to the exhaust valve stems leaking. This issue is known to Mazda but there is no recall, only the "Mazda Valve Stem Seal Settlement". The settlement requires that Mazda repair the leaky valve stems if the vehicle has low oil between oil changes. I scheduled the valve stem repair at the Dealership where I purchased the vehicle, Jim Click Mazda Eastside in Tucson, AZ. I was told that there would be a delay because they were waiting to receive a special tool from Mazda to do the repair. After waiting 2 months I called the dealership to check on the status of the tool. I was told that they were still waiting and had no ETA for the tool. I then called the next closest dealership, Horne Mazda in Tempe, AZ. I asked if they have the special tool required to repair the valve stems and if they have performed this repair. I was told that there is no special tool needed and that they do several of these repairs every week. Come to find out, Jim Click Mazda did not have a mechanic that could do the repair. Horne Mazda got me in the next week and repaired the valve stem seals at no charge to me.""
