Mercedes-Benz Metris First Drive

Summary

Introduction

Mercedes' commercial van is not a viable alternative to a traditional minivan

Overview

The Metris is fundamentally a commercial van that splits the size difference between Ford's compact Transit Connect and the Transit van. Two versions are offered: a Spartan commercial one and a more-finished passenger version. The passenger version offers options such as power sliding doors, automatic climate control, and a rear-view camera, which bumps the price up to near $43,000. The sole powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a seven-speed automatic.

Impressions

The turbo four-cylinder provides more than adequate progress for most purposes. The rear-wheel-drive Metris has an independent rear suspension, and delivers responsive handling. Turning circle is extremely tight, making this big Benz easy to maneuver and park.

The ride is steady but on the overly firm side.

The van is square and upright, providing easy access and good visibility, and it can seat up to eight in individual chairs. Each chair is comfortable and supportive. However, unlike conventional minivans, it lacks the ability to fold or slide seats for flexible seating versus cargo hauling duties.

Controls might be a bit unusual for the uninitiated but manageable. There's a decent cargo area behind the third-row seat and the floor is low for easy loading and unloading.
